In a 12U game played under high school rules, after ball 4 was called the batter walked towards his dugout to toss his bat to a teammate. He did not enter the dugout, probably got about 1/3 way there. Umpire called him out. I was a spectator, so I did not hear the explanation given to the coach, but I heard the coach say something to the effect he was called out for leaving the home plate area. Curious what rule this falls under. Thanks.

I do appreciate the time the umps here spend reviewing and answering questions.

now that we have had a bit of fun, Im assuming the umpire called the batter/runner out for abandoning his attempt to advance.....

In OBR leagues, he could be called our for leaving the dirt circle or vicinity of the plate area, but under FED he would have to be entering the dugout............and yet calling either of these things in a 12u game given the circumstances you described is silly and OOO......
It is very possible the batter stepped on the grass outside the plate circle, so I am guessing that was the justification for the call. But as you mentioned that is OBR, not FED. There were a fair amount of discussions with coaches on both teams over calls missed. Nothing to heated, but some disagreement, so may have been an attempt by the ump to regain control by calling it by the book, even though he was using the wrong book.
