Bases loaded 2 out, 2-0 count, catcher desperate to make a play before a run is walked in attempts to back pick the runner at 3rd with a RH hitter in the box. The hitter is completely unaware that the catcher is attempting a pick to 3rd...the catcher doesn't clear himself to make the throw and throws the ball off of the hitters bat. Again, then hitter had no clue the catcher was attempting a pick. I think the best call should have either been, live ball or at worst a dead ball, no runners advance. Instead the umpire calls batter interference for the 3rd out. He says the hitter has to give the catcher a lane to throw in. ???? wtf? I would understand if the batter had moved backwards out of the box and into the catcher but he was still in the box. The hitter can't turn invisible simply because the catcher wants to attempt an ill advised pick. If this was the correct call, catchers should be instructed to throw balls off of hitters at will.

first post, this question has been lingering on my mind.

1. Batter is right on the plate, catcher throws to third batter takes 1/2 step back now is in middle of batters box, catcher throws ball  into left field.

2. This one happened yesterday. Batter moves in the box catcher bobbles the ball and makes  the throw and bumps into batter on release of ball. Umpire stated since the ball was bobbled before the throw it was not BI.

Ive heard coaches say throw the ball through the batter but what is the correct way to teach the catcher in these situations.

Thanks

Again, HTBT...

I think I'd have BI in both.

First, the batter cannot move.  Many batters habitually "step out" after the pitch and thus can unknowingly create the interference situation.  If the batter stays still in the box, then the catcher is taught to throw around him using a drop step to create the lane.  If the batter moves, most situations I have seen the umps require the catcher to throw the ball into the batter to get the call.

Agreed on the first part.

On the bold, a throw is not required, and clearly a "throw into the batter" is not needed.  An ATTEMPT to throw is required -- if there's no throw, the umpire must judge if F2 stopped because of INT, or if F2 didn't have a good grip on the ball, or there wasn't a play on, or if it was a fake to see if another runner would move off the base, etc.  That judgment can be difficult.
