Batter/runner retreating running to 1B | High School Baseball Web

Guys,

I forget cause I've been away from the game for a while (kinda like Roy Hobbs). If the batter/runner, after hitting the ball into fair territory, takes off for first, stops and then starts to retreat toward home plate...is he giving himself up and is therefore automatically out? Or does he have to be forced at 1B or tagged of course?

The batter-runner may retreat toward the plate. He is not out until he reaches or passes the plate.

In softball, the batter-runner is out if he retreats away from 1st toward home.

I think he is trying to dispell a baseball myth by acknowledging the softball difference.
