I have a Baseball question. Yesterday I was doing a freshman softball game at Central high. The Varsity baseball game started at 6:30 pm so our game was in progress. Anyway players from Central were taking swings in the batting cage when I noticed that they were not wearing batting helmets while facing "live" pitching. Not being a "baseball" official I did ask if they didn't need helmets during this drill. Is this true or did they "sell" the call to me. The umps were not at the field when all of this was going on so they are OK.
I would imagine that they do need helmets in the cages?

While I agree the umpire has no jurisdiction in the situation described in the OP, the above statment is not universally true.

Umpires do have jurisdiction over some player behaivors before the start of games while they are off the field. But again, not this one.
