Can you bat out of order your first time through the order? I have always thought that how you bat the first time through establishes the batting order, not the line up card. Might be local option rule we had. Thanks in advance.

Yes. And it's the name (not the number) that governs.
If you can bat in any order the first time through, why do you have a plate meeting and line-up exchange. The line-up establishes the batting order and who the pitcher is. There are penalties for not following both things.
