NEWS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 13, 2011
The best high school baseball players from 4 states will compete for bragging rights and the attention of collegiate and pro scouts at the inaugural Battle of the Borders All- American Game in Grand Prairie, Texas, September 30th through October 2nd.
The New Balance All-Americans, invited from Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico will play each other in a highly competitive weekend baseball tournament at Quick Trip Park in Grand Prairie. The tournament will begin with a state against state home run derby and a barbecue dinner.
Top baseball prospects, high school juniors and seniors, will be selected through a nomination process, which includes a vote by a panel of coaches from each state. Being invited to play will be an honor and an opportunity. The event will attract collegiate and professional scouts from across the country.
The Battle of the Borders will give baseball fans, scouts, and the news media an opportunity to see the college and professional baseball stars of tomorrow, all together in the heart of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and New Mexico produce an enormous amount of baseball talent. The Battle of the Borders promises to bring the very best talent from each state together for a western shoot-out and some good old-fashioned hard ball.

The Louisiana team is missing LHP Garret Williams?? If you are talking top players in the state...

O'Dwyer, Thorne, Bregman and Favela are absolute studs. Thorne can hit too, Favella is a beast with a plus arm, he's a man!

Texas beat Oklahoma today in the finals. Score was 4-2. This was a really fun group of kids to coach. Outstanding pitching, hitting, and defense. Jake Thompson and Willie Schwankee led Team Texas in hitting, both hitting over .400 for the tournament. Stankiewicz, Brown, Shaw, and all won their games. Outstanding relief performances by Alexander, Thompson, Koch, Vinson, Melton, and Reich. Other good hitting performances by Kramer, Rodgers, Vinson, and Koch all hitting over .330 for the tournament.

We had a great time in the Metroplex. This was an outstanding event for the 1st year and I know it will only get better. My 2013s on the roster all asked if they were going to be able to come back and play in the event next year. Our kids love to get out and compete against the top players from different states that are considered "baseball rich" in talent.

Top Hitters
Cullen Odwyer - hit one of the two home runs I saw in the event
Alex Bregman - same 'ol kid
Shilo McCall - Power and can really run
Ryder Jones - Steady at the plate and in the infield
Taylor Uselman - came up with a few key hits

Defense
Shane Woodson - ran down some big outs in the OF
Cody Scagarri - played solid at 2nd, SS, and 3rd
Jose Favela - C, threw real well

Pitching -
G. Trujillo - 1 run in 4 innings
Taylor Duree - struck out 6 straight at one point
Brett Worthen - slowed down the "monsters" from OK in relief
Tyler Thorne - 1 run in 3 innings vs TX
Jacy Cave - 1 run in 3 inniings vs LA
Team Texas played a great tournament. Most of these players have played with and against each other for many years. They really came together as a team and had fun. Team Texas battled from behind to win the championship game over a very talented Team Oklahoma. The Texas coaches did a wonderful job. The New Balance Battle of the Borders was a great event and will only get better in the future. A very large number of scouts were in attendance to see the players from four very talented teams. Congratulations to Team Texas on a well deserved championship.

Team Texas was lacking a true centerfielder. Grapevine's Brandon Koch and Flower Mound's Andrew Vinson, both middle infielders, traded off duties in center field. Both did an outstanding job. But, I agree, 2012 outfielders should have been given more consideration for the team...especially a speedster to patrol centerfield.
