Thoughts on if anyone else thinks that wood and composite are on a level bbcor playing field. Is one better than the other? The only thing I have noticed is that it may be harder to square up wood.

I think it is pretty simple. Wood has a smaller sweet spot. The BBCOR standard deals with velocities in an attempt to equalize wood and other materials. The advantage composite, aluminum, and other man made materials has is to control the size of the sweet spot, swing weight and other characteristics.
The other thing to consider is Wood breaks often so cost is a concern.
Kids using metal bats can hit the ball off the handle and often get it to drop in. With wood, that would be a squibber or a broken bat. As a result, with BBCOR, there is less self-reinforcing discipline to keep the hands in to get the barrel on the inside pitch. That is one reason many players in BBCOR leagues use wood to train with in the offseason.
$25 low grade ash bat at the local big box store... no. Top grade maple bat, maybe so.
