can we get more information on that kempsville bayside game?

saw landstown beat tallwood. Landstown played well defensively, and surprisingly pitching wise with Schiable pitching very well through 4 innings giving up only one run. Hitting wise a battle for both teams. Tallwoods pitching is very shallow. It might be a long year for Avila and the Lions.
Kellam vs. Princess Anne game was dominated by both teams pitchers. Shiner for 5 and Moynihan for 3 were excellent for Kellam with 13 K's/1 BB/4 hits. Lemaster for 6 and Begley for 1 2/3 were just as good with 11 K's/3BB/6 hits. Kellam's defense was better in the end giving up one unearned run on one error, while PA committed four errors and all three Kellam runs were unearned. I left the game impressed with Mr. Tomchick's offensive ability since everyone knows how well he throws !
I know the other thread talks about padding stats, but 1 score keeper gave a player a double when it was a dropped flyball by the centerfielder, how I know? I was standing next to the player's dad who hit the ball and he he said the that was an E, allday, Happened in a game yesterday. I don't think pitchers are sharpe, I've noticed a high number of walks from all districts. All teams will get better in the next few weeks. Its going to be a great season, anybody can beat anybody
I think that kellam is a very decent contact hitting team. Nobody that will power the ball on their team, but they do execute well. The second inning , sandifer walked 2 batters, then a hit, and then a bases clearing double fueled the 5 run outburst. other than that it was actually a very well played game pitching and defensively by both teams. Offenses for both teams werent the greatest yesterday, but i was impressed by the defense. Closer game than the score indicates, but kellam is a very sound team, and when landstown pitches well, they are pretty good too.

Wow...that is a backhanded compliment and also inaccurate. If we based the same analysis on yesterday's game, we could all draw plenty of conclusions about Landstown's power. BUT that would be inaccurate as well - I know Scotty Hurrell is a good hitter.

as for "powering the ball" both Kellam and Landstown have several kids VERY capable of driving the ball out of any ball field in the district. Moynahan, straud, and sinnen for Kellam and Hurrell, sandifer, ferrante, hinton, and faison for landstown. Both teams are going to have many longballs before the season is over.
Hey guys, it is way toooooo early in the season to make any kind of conclusions.
Playright, I don't believe anybody is under-estimating Kellam with competition in the beach district. However, all three runs scored against PA were unearned. By the way, how is the nose doing?
Just remember, Karma is a "bummer". Be careful about bold statements concerning power hitters.

Looking at the distorted stats in the Pilot, it looks like the odds are with anybody by just putting the ball in play.

I do believe it will be the year of "small ball"
Redbird, did not mean for it to be a backhanded comment. I probably should havve rephrased what i meant. I meant that kellam will not live or die by the longball, because many of their hitters are contact hitters. I know plenty that hit for power, but i know thats not how they will win a majority of their games. and i know landstown is a perfectly capable team, and i wasnt basing anything off yesterday's game, I was simply stating that kellam executes very well and can use all parts of the field to their advantage as well as anyone i can think of. Landstown does have its share of power, and i think in the end , both teams will be very good teams.
Ms. Lynn I was only commenting on a earlyer comment that Kellam or Landstown have no power, both teams have plenty of power and will have their share of long balls before the seasons over. I agree with your comment about the pilot, are they reporting in error are teams/coaches "fluffing stats"? bottom line, their is a ton of baseball yet to play. I still think Kellam has been overlooked by many and very well may be the best TEAM in the beach IMHO. Landstown needs to find some pitching if sandifer can't get it going, does he have a injury? thats what I am hearing.
I have not seen Kellam play this year but I know the coaching staff, Kellam will not lose games, they might get beat, but they are a sound team, and Landstown has very good talent, seems that the pitchers are behind in their work, too many walks, I agree with Yankee 1943 and redbird, way too early to tell anything, seems that the teams that are catching the ball and throwing strikes are winning, the good hitting teams will hit, but you have to catch the ball and throw stikes, the line scores look like Little League games, from all districts.
playwright,

I was just chatting last night with someone very familiar with Beach baseball. Lots of high school guys can hit a homerun, but how many is that really???? Some of the old timers on here remember more than me, but the point is the TOTAL number of bombs by any player are not really that many.
Everybody has their opinion about the best Team etc... but be careful........
Remember your first win was on unearned runs and it looks like Landstown didn't challenge your young team.
Who do you play during Spring Break?

IMHO if you guys continue to be ...... in the dugout while up to bat, that will eventually be your downfall! Remember we all have opinions!
Lynn,

The kids are cheering for their team no t antagonizing the pitcher. And, you're right...we all have opinions. In mine, their cheering is really nothing. There is far more fanfare about it than anything. It is not directed at the pitcher but at their teammate.

So I am guessing you don't like the timing of it? Would it help if they started it sooner?

Redbird,
It is kind of hard for you to be objective when your child is a chanter. Question is, how would your kid respond on the mound while another team was trying to mess with his timing?????? Don't you think these young ball players have enough pressure just being out there?
By the way, I can heckle better than anybody and never say anything negative.

I certainly hope Sandifer will get stronger and do well. He is by far the best athlete at the beach. Best of luck to him!!
Since I have been told my opinion is worthless, let's try this:

Sportsmanship- conduct characteristic or worthy of a sportsman, as fair play or the ability to accept defeat graciously.

This is high school baseball where the coach is a teacher first and foremost, then gets a stipend for an extra-curricular activity.

Maybe cheers that relate to baseball would be more appropriate. Cheers that include verbs!

Respectfully yours,

Lynn Metheny
Birddog,
This obviously has nothing to do with being quiet or having an individual achievement sport. Everbody likes to hear the crowd and players get into the game.
The question is and will remain, is the
"taunting" as described by someone appropriate?

Absolutely not, nor would it be wise to let that be the "identity" of your team. It does win games as shown this past week. Wouldn't you rather have everybody say, "that team is really good, they can hit, they can play defense and their pitchers are really good." As opposed to, "why do they need to taunt the pitcher?"

I am now getting off my soap box, because obviously this unsportmanlike conduct is tolerated every year. I will now leave my house to actually go watch a baseball game. Anybody interested?????
No, it isn't hard to be objective. My son was not chanting at Landstown, although he may have been against PA. Either way, how would he respond? I would venture to guess he would tell me he didn't hear them. He doesn't really hear anything once he is on the rubber or in the box. I can't see how something a team says which is NOT directed at the pitcher would affect his timing. If so, he probably shouldn't be pitching at the varsity level.

As for heckling, they are not heckling nor are they saying anything negative towards the opposing team.

This really is a non-issue.

Give me a break Redbird, pitching at varsity level, this isn't a Yankee/Redsox game. The behavior is bush league, you know it, I know it and every team you play knows it.
Please, for the love of god, don't challenge me! I can assure you that your son would hear every single thing that I say, if in fact that would be my intention.
I beg to differ with you, just because you think it is not directed at the pitcher, doesn't mean it isn't. I am sure the next thing we will hear is "Swing batter, batter!"
