Belmont is a lower level D1 but they do very well in their conference. They have to practice off campus and play their games off campus which limits the number of students that attend the games. Nashville supports the Nashville Sounds (AAA) and Vanderbilt baseball very well but only a core group of people attend the Belmont University, David Lipscomb and Trevecca college games. If you feel that the people of Tennessee don't support their teams very well you need to attend a Vanderbilt game with one of the SEC opponents.
JAFO!!!!

I am originally from Chatt & Chatt State has a great program. Several players from the Dallas area are & have been there. As I understand it, the coach came from CCJC in Plano (?).

It's hard to believe that they are gone. It seems like yesterday when we were all playing each other as 10 yr olds.

Thunder/Texans/Horns/Tigers.

cbg, no harm by JAFO. You have to know the Dallas area baseball scene to understand.

CBG,

If you have to play off campus playing some games in the Nashville Sounds triple A stadium is not to bad.

Could be that a new facility is on the way? Wait & see.

I would rank the Atlantic Sun (RPI rankings) as a mid level D1 conference. 2 teams made the NCAA regionals, one was ranked (which Belmont beat in the conference tournament). Many draft picks as well.

Belmont finished in 3rd place in the reg season & second in the conf championship.

Matybe a mid level D1 is a more realistic description? (I admit bias!!!)

Surely not SEC/ACC/Conf USA/Pac 10, ect. but still competitive.

Thoughts?

Tennessee Baseball Report

I think geography/population may play a role in that perception. The baseball community of the Memphis area is small enough that most people/parents, keep in touch the "old fashioned" way, seeing each other in town, school, church, by phone, etc... Current Teams will establish a way of communicating with each other, yes even electronically! Most of the top high school age players play on Dulins Dodgers in the summer. There are only two other non-school related competitive high school age teams from the Memphis area, the Tigers and APAK. Not too much to keep up with.

Few outsiders realize that TN is really three states Wink; West Tn, Middle Tn and East Tn. (Fungo might be helpful in explaining this phenomena?)

Within a couple of hours or less drive players from Memphis are recruited out of state to Ole Miss, Miss St., Arkansas, Missouri... Within a few hours drive from the Nashville area you have Auburn, Ala, Louisville, Kentucky... and a short drive from the Chattanooga area you have GA Tech, UGA, USC... Our players wind up scattered across many states in college ball. That's in addition to our fine in state baseball programs, including three 2007 D-1 NCAA Regional Playoff teams, Memphis, Vanderbilt, and Austin-Peay. Lets not forget SEC TN with their new head coach! Walters State TN won the 2006 Juco World Series!! TEAM USA has had their share of TN players the past couple of years as well. My son's high school, Collierville High School, TN had three players drafted this year Jonathan Stambaugh, RHP Cardinals (Brigham Young Univ), Zach Cozart SS (Ole Miss) and Drew Promeranz 07 LHP who is attending Ole Miss this fall. BTW, Drew's BIG brother Stuart is a RHP with the Cardinals and Stuart's former highschool teammate, pitcher Mat Cain, is doing all right with the Giants. Pretty decent for a little ole town just east of Memphis Big Grin.

Oh! I almost forgot. Fed Ex donated $3,000,000.00 to the University of Memphis Baseball Program for New Facilities. Yippee!!! State of the Art EVERYTHING!!!! With an eye toward hosting an NCAA event. As my son said "First Class!"

In case you couldn't guess, I dropped my son off at Memphis. They are working hard in their strength and conditioning program competing for the title of "Ultimate Iron Tiger." Think of the gruelling "Iron" man competition /marine corps boot camp.

I hope that wasn't too Fanatical!!!

GO TIGERS!!!!!!!!!

My son spent two years playing at Boulvelard rival, Lipscomb Univresity. It was a great two years of playing with an additional year of working in Nashville. He recently entered medical school in Alabama and really hated to leave Nashville.

The Atlantic Sun Conference is competitive. They have lost some name schools in the past three years (Florida Atlantic, Troy, Central Florida) but added schools that field competitive teams. Stetson and Jacksonville are usually leaders but don't overlook any team in the conference. Last year Lipscomb took 2 of 3 from LSU in Baton Rouge and beat Auburn and Vandy as well.

Belmont is a great school and has a quality baseball program. I hope your son has success on the field and in the classroom. Enjoy the next four years; it will be over before you realize.
SL,

I remember traveling to Olive Branch Mississippi for the 10 yr old AABC World Series. We were knocked out by the Memphis Tigers. I wonder if that is still a BB org?

We were homered by the umps or we would have won! (Just kidding). As I recall the Tigers were a very good team and very well coached.

Thanks for the info. You are right on about the closeness of the boarder stses and baseball programs.

Here in Texas, the Dallas, Houston, Austin rivalry in all sporst, but especially select baseball, is very intense.

Good luck to your son at Memphis! (Memphis State as I remember!!!)
glhamda, The Memphis Boys Athletic Association still sponsors the Memphis Tigers Baseball program, their website is www.memphistigers.net and they have a nice program. However, IMHO Dulins Dodgers fields the most competitive High School age teams and their website can be found by clicking on "Dulins Dodgers" at www.gamedayprospects.com

We understand the bit about intense rivalry having moved to West,TN from the Atlanta area and the great baseball competition in the State of GA.

Good luck to your son at Belmont! It would be tough on me to be so far away, especially once the season starts.

JAFO good luck to your son at Chat State too! That is a beautiful area to live. One of our Collierville HS alumuni and a great person, Andy Simunic, did rather well at Chat State and went on to have a great season last yeat at University of TN. Check out his stats at UT and at Chat State. All this from a player who had to ride the pine most of the time in high school behind another MLB draft prospect! His is an inspiring story.

BTW, its "The University of Memphis" if you remember/say Memphis State it shows your age Wink
