What do you think my benchmark for pitching velocity should be for next season when I try out for JV as a 10th grader? I know a lot of you guys are gonna say that velocity isn't important but if you don't have velocity, you usually don't get looked at unless you can locate the ball like Greg Maddux. So tell me what speed I should try to reach in 12 months. I am 5'7 160 pounds. I throw in the low 70's. I haven't grown much in the last few years so hopefully that will change this year. Please note that I go to a highschool with a really really good baseball program that I think might be one of the top 50 baseball programs in the nation.

Get involved in a core training program. Try Ron Wolforths at pitching central. Typically you will see a 5-6mph increase assuming this is something you haven't been involved with previously. Along with that find someone who can help with your mechanics, many young men throw with just their arm. Then also a long toss program on a regular basis and you'll be surprised about how much you can and will improve. I have seen these increases in person so it works.

Just work hard at improving and everything else will come together. Too much emphasis is put on velocity. Sure it doesn't hurt but if you can get people out and have a good change and good control you will be fine. Just work real hard and the coaches will see the difference when you try out again next year.

For JV it's adequate if you have other pitches and reasonable control. Given this year's circumstances JV should be a reasonable goal.
