A DIII coach who is recruiting my son asked him to apply now to the college. He said there is more money available in financial aid to the players who apply early. I am not sure how this works and was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of the financial aid process and any benefits of applying early to the school.

Remember that there is a difference between applying early and applying "early decision". For the most part an early application does not preclude the student from applying elsewhere and discussing with coaches from other schools different options. Applying "early decision" means that if the student is accepted he will attend that school regardless of the financial aid package (or baseball playing options) which are then proposed by the university.
Double Eagle and btbballfannumber1, thanks for the advice! It would certainly not be good to be locked in to a binding agreement by mistake. I took another look at the admissions website at this college. All of their admissions are Regular Decision. They do not have an Early Decision or Early Action admission option.
