I have a player that was contacted about playing for the Bergen Beach team in an upcoming tourney. Anyone have any experience with this? This same player has been to the TOS,PG National, and is currently at the 17u wwba. We know that those events are premier but is this team really what it is cracked up to be?

I also got a call from him a couple looking for guys. He is very cordial. He mentioned all his past pro players and how they have won the CABA high school world series every year. How is could get players on the map. I listened and then gave him our history with past and current players. He called our top pitcher Giolito. He doesn't need anymore exposure. If you have done TOS, PG National and WWBA I think that is just fine.
There have been a number of fairly heated discussiona about this program at this site over the years.

Beregen Beach charges substantial fees to players trying out for its team.

Various posters have expressed the opinion that the purpose of the tryouts is not to identify players but to raise money to cover expenses for the elite players they already know they want.

I cannot evaluate that opinion because I politely declined when I received the sales call and do not know what actually happens at the tryouts. However, it is hard for me to imagine a scenario in which I would pay for a tryout.
Let me answer with last year's situation. He was very nice and promised everything. I flew my son to Cleveland and he had someone meet him at the airport. He pitched the first day and did great. But the team did not produce. He gave them no details of when to be where and game times and stuff. They were searching for rides to games with parents and coaches.
Then the ultimate. Team lost in quarterfinals on a bad game with plenty of pitching left. He got mad and did not speak to the players. Players from around the US were left in the motel to find their own way home and to the airport. My 18 year old was lucky enough to find a family going to Kentucky and rode with them and then we drove 5 hours to pick him up. A player from Colorado had to get a cab to the airport which cost him $75 and pay for his motel room because the bill was not paid. I would not recommend anyone playing for this guy. Since this happened to us I have heard many horror stories. I don't understand why A-Rod lets his name be associated with this team.

And what a Circus...
He had some outstanding players there and came out of the losers bracket to win, but his demeanor, the things he did and tried to do were such that anybody with any kind of respect for the game would be embarrassed to be associated him....
I congratulate the talented and gritty kids that came a long way to play in the tourney, but the Coach flying in illegal players and claiming they were legal, posturing and swearing, threatening to kick anyone's a$$ who tried to call him on it, parading the catcher and the illegal pitcher in uniform in front of the other teams dugout to have him warm up on the other teams side of the field right after I heard him tell his buddy cronies "I guarantee he'll be coming over to our dugout!" Evidently talking about the opposing coach or manager. The guy has been pulling this stuff for years and is an embarrassment to the game. Play with the kids you rostered to start the tourney and let the kids play it out on the field.

And let's be clear about the "World Series" they won. There are lots and lots of tournaments that bill themselves as world series or national championships.

You have to look at each tournament to see if it lives up to its name.

This particular tournament had 64 teams. 40 of the 64 teams were from Ohio. All but a small handful of the remaining teams were from states that touch Ohio or were from Illinois. It might be a wonderful regional event for upper Midwest players, but it's not a major gathering of the top prospects in the nation.

Yet to play in this tournament of local/regional-level travel teams, Bergen Beach holds regional tryouts around the country and flies in a national-caliber all star team.

Seriously, what is the point of this overkill? Why don't they round up their talent a couple weeks earlier and see if they can win WWBA every year?

Amen to this Swampboy. We played this team at CABA. They were not that impressive. This was their last pool play game so who knows, they probably had 4 90MPH arms waiting in the wings somewhere but we played awful comitting 7 errors and basically hung in the game. That team would get smoked at WWB in East Cobb.
