Lot of talk about pitching coaches. On the positive side who was the best pitching coach you or your son has had and why? (Perhaps excluding the current coach would be a good idea to keep from ruffling any feathers.)

Me: The Angels sent two of the Lachemann (sp?) brothers down to work with us, but it was so long ago that I couldn't tell you which two and all they really did with me was watch a couple pens.

Son: His youth pitching instructor was a guy named Dave Zall. He was a good pitching instructor for kids and one of the finest human beings you could ever hope to meet.

His pitching instructor later on was Darren Spiller. He wasn't a big mechanics guy, but he was very good at getting pitchers to repeat their release point.

Eddie Bonine. Starter for the Detroit Tigers. He was rehabbing in Phoenix last year and working out at Victory Lane. He didn't have to do anything but he wanted to help kids. He voluntarily coached any kid who practiced at Victory Lane. Helped my son a lot and a bunch of others. For free.

Great kid and great coach. Didn't try to change much of anything, just smooth out the edges and give them drills to work on to get better.

Great guy.
Leo Mazzone has to be the best pitching coach my son has worked with. Leo can see just the smallest things that make the biggest difference but at the same time does not feel he has teak a pitcher's motion just for the sake of change.

My son's regular pitching instructor has been awesome, though, and continues to find ways to develop him, even after 4 years of instruction.
Larry Carter. AA pitching coach for Kansas City. Started working with my son in off season when he was 10. Only worked with him 4-5 times each off season. Taught him the proper way now as a freshman in HS he will be one of the starting pitchers. He is an excellent teacher wheather working with a 10 year old or college player he just knows how to relate.
Good positive topic CADad.

Son has worked with about 10 coaches over the years. Current one is hands down the best:

1. Modern understanding of pitching. He is currently a MiLB pitcher in a pitcher centric organization. Maybe because he is currently pitching he understands my son’s issues better. (not sure but it is working)
2. Results. Has got more out of my son than any coach to date.
3. Communicates well.
4. Fun to be with so son enjoys time with him. Relates very well with him.
5. Cheap. (not that this is all that important, but it helps Wink)
6. Flexible and available at the times my son is available.
Fritz Hamburg...
Currently Head Coach at St. Joes
Former NCAA Pitching Coach of The Year

Tough, fair, universally loved by his players, and respected by his peers.

The one coach that my son really thought he would have liked to play for...

Mark McQueen
Currently Head Coach at Richmond
Former NCAA Pitching Coach of The Year

McQueen was the pitching coach for a number of MLB pitchers while at college, including Verlander.

It was down to Richmond and Juniors current school as his final 2.
