Smokey - Thanks for the links on Omaha, I will send it to all our parents.
We are all very excited about the trip, I think the boys will have just as much fun in Omaha as they did at last year's tournament in Cooperstown.
Based on many reports from many different teams in various age groups...Omaha is MUCH more competitive than Cooperstown.
I agree with Soxnole's point. Copperstown has many Youth Baseball Association Teams involved that can't compete with the Full-Time Travel Teams. That said everyone I have talked to had fun there.....plus every young ball player ought to get to the HOF at some time. These kids should become life-long baseball fans.
FBDad........agree 100%.
and.....I have absolutely no idea where to eat in Cooperstown!
while...Smokey covered Omaha's eateries very well.

I forgot to mention one...
I really like those Webber Grill places that you guys have in Chicagoland....we eat at one every time we play down at UIC...

My Chicago steak house list.
1) For pure steak (get the strip) with great appetizers and sides...Ruth's Chris.(Chicago only)
2) Almost equal to Ruth's Chris but much louder with some great scenery at the bar...Gibson's.
3) No scenery and so-so apps/sides..Chop House.
4) Way to expensive for a similar meal to the above..but they do serve Ferrari wine...Morton's.
5) Sullivan's...across from Ruth's Chris.
6) Kiefer's..1 more block south.
7) Gene & Georgetti's....along with Tom's steak house, they don't char and to me, they are both overated.
Keep in mind that the Chicago and New Orleans Ruth's Chris are far and away the best in the chain....Morton's is solid at every stop and Gibson's is great downtown or in Rosemont..edge to downtown. Sullivan's is a hidden gem.

Some of our favorites:
TJ Ribs - Baton Rouge, by far the best ribs I've had, plus outstanding LSU memorabilia
Mike Anderson's - BR and NO, fantastic seafood gumbo
Mr B's Bistro, NO - best andouille gumbo, IMHO
Upperline - best Creole restaurant in NO (at intersection of Prytania and Upperline streets in Upper Garden District)
Tommy Toy's, SF/Hong Kong - best Chinese cuisine in the world, IMHO
Late, lamented Camellia Grill - corner of Carrollton and St Charles Avenue, upper Garden District NO, best pre-Mardi Gras omelette I've had, but it succumbed to that bitc* Katrina
Chicago Chop House - hands down, agree with rosy about the bone-in ribeye, try the grilled prime rib, even better IMHO
Lawry's Chicago - don't need to say anything, best prime rib
Old Mill Tavern - Sheridan, IL, by far the best, and largest, fried chicken I know, probably incubated the chicken eggs in a local nuculear (as W would say) plant containment vessel...
Carrabba's - Ft Myers, Bradenton, Orlando excellent Italian food, Friday drink specials outstanding...lot's of local, nubile, scantily-clad female talent, too...excellent fuel for PG players before Ft Myers events...
Jack London's Pub - Carmel, CA, best deep-fried artichoke hearts, but be careful, you get a little "explosive" after too many of those gems...
Louie's Restaurant - Joliet, IL, best cheap breakfast I know, get there before the local Catholic churches let out...
Tuscany on Taylor - no commentary needed, my favorite Italian in Chicago
Al's Number One - best beef in Chicago, IMHO...my old grad school stomping grounds (UI Medical Center)
I could go on for hours, but won't bore everyone...

One more spot in Chicago, “Fogo De Chao” on LaSalle just north of Ontario. One of the best feed bags I’ve ever been to. They have Gauchos (not to be confused with g a y caballeros) running around with all kinds of meat and poultry on spits. They give you a token, red on one side green on the other. If your token is flipped green these Gauchos show up with spits and carve meat onto your plate. Once your plate is piled high, flip the token red to stop. Repeat the process until full. It’s nuts. The salad bar is unbelievable, biggest I’ve ever seen, with everything. They also have this Brazilian concoction that has a nice kick to it…. About $45.00/person without drinks.

But do they serve Bushmill's?
Another Brazilian Steak House in the Western Burbs is Sal Carvo in Downers just off 355. Similiar set up as Fogo De Chao is you don't feel like making the trip into the city. About the same price, in the $40-$45 dollar range. If you really hungry, this place is a must!
One to add to Omaha is Azteca Mexican Restaurant. It's at I-80 and 144th St. Authentic Mexican food worth the trip just for the salsa.

My mom used to give us smokey links for lunch when I was a kid. These Omaha ones are better than the ones I used to eat.

can we put a stop to this...Wendys is the best
After they cut the salad bar all that is left is the frosty!
The chicken sandich is good but it's no Chick Filet.

Soxnole: You like the White Sox, seemed to be a closet Packer fan, now Bushmills, the best Irish Whiskey in the world. They have been making the stuff since 1608. You are my hero!
Looks like we need to have lunch...
where and when is all thats left to decide!

Soxnole, how do we find out what we need to do to get a Chick-fil-A franchise (or several) in the Chicago area. Only thing around here that's close is Culver's and it's not that close.
Mike F
Chick-Fil-A! That IS something we have here--if you count Nashua, NH as "here", that is. soxnole a Packer fan? You, sir, are redeemed in my estimation.
Mike F
I agree. Chick-Fil-A is easily the single best fast food establishment in the US.
I think it was 30 years ago that I first walked into a McDonald's and had 3 people sing out "may I help you?" (not any more). That is how you are greeted @ C-F-A. The spotless store and great food make it a must everytime I trip to Tallahassee, Atlanta, etc.
Try the southwestern chicken salad with the spicy dressing...Wow!
I read recently that they will soon go nationwide. Lets hope so.

Holden.....when the Cardinal's left town I joined Grampa on Sunday's every time the Pack played in Milwaukee.
However, when Don Shula became head coach in Miami and my family had moved to south florida, my Packer memories faded until I returned in 74. I simply can't root for any team that played @ Wrigley!

I have to agree with TARatko, Carrabas in Bradenton, FL is phenomenal. Great Italian food, bread, and chicken. Best caesar salad and chicken parmesan that i have ever tasted.
cougarfan,
I usually don't leave room for dessert but I make one exception. I love going to Joe's Steak and Seafood (Joe's Stone Crab)and they serve the very best key lime pie that you could ever imagine. Served very cold on an ice cold plate. And to think I just settled for applesauce at home.

I thought we talking about a little Irish!

This is fattening just reading about it!
Some tidbits from an overweight, well traveled Irishman:
La Melonaise. La Scarola. I'm there asap!
Joe's is tops for Surf and Turf, one of my favorite's...nice call rosy.
Joe's Stone Crab in South Beach gets the stone crab's and key lime pie for the Chicago restaurant. The original in South Beach is my favorite restaurant in Florida.
Speaking of Florida, the aforementioned Carrabba's is very good but only so-so compared to a Chicago or NY REAL Italian joint, imo. The Carraba's chain is owned by Outback, founded by a wonderful Irishman that just happened to graduate from Florida State, named Tim Gannon. Tim and I grew up together, were Phi Delt's together @ FSU and have remained good friends, although with over 1000 restaurants (Outback, Carrabba's, Flemings and the Bonefish Grill, to name a few) all over the world he is truly living the life we all dream of!
But absolutely no place, anywhere compares to Bob Chinn's in Wheeling when it comes to fresh seafood and the wide variety, not in the US, Belgium, Italy or even France.
There is a very special place on the French Rivera (Antibes?) called Tattoo which has the most unbelievable Bouillabaisse in the world...$250.00 for 2 and worth it!...and that was in 1985.

Heard there was another new magazine out there, wondering if it lists the top 100 food joints too? lol
I just love the The Great Steak & Potato Company which you can find at a mall near you. I recommend twelve Super Steaks and each one has grilled steak with onions green peppers mushrooms and provolone cheese. You'll love them to.
Before the Joliet "Will County" Oldtimers' dinner, Merichka's in Crest Hill. Best Hoagie in the area..................
Merichka's
Unbelievable sandwich. Not for the dieting crowd.
Sulltiger24/Soxnole,
LaMelonaise is closed. Apparently, the grandgparents were up in age and the son was not interested in the business.

In the meantime, head down to grand and may to Bari's for a couple of submarines .
