Condredge Holloway was nice enough to speak at the innaugural West High Leadoff Banquet tonight. Many forget that he was a great baseball player, earning all-american honors while at UT. I think he was only half-joking tonight when he said he wished he'd stayed with baseball so that he could avoid the limp he walks with.

He told the boys it was okay to dream, but prepare themselves for the future, as very few will earn a living playing baseball.

For those of us old enough to remember, I still think he was the most electrifying player to ever wear the orange and white.

He said that he'd done the saddest thing he'd ever had to do yesterday in attending the funeral of former Vol QB Jimmy Streater. He said Streater was buried with his UT jersey on.

I know this is only partly about baseball, but I wanted to acknowledge Condredge. Also thanks to Bob Ross for putting the event together.

Bizazz,
John Parker Wilson of Hoover Al may be the next player like Condredge. When he signed with the Tide over over scholarship offers from Ole Miss, Clemson and Tennessee, "I think I can play both in the SEC," Wilson said.

Per TeamOne he rates 4/4:
Bio Notes: Wilson is a two-way prospect on the baseball diamond and the football field. He has all the tools and actions to play shortstop in college and/or become a "plus" defensive MLB third baseman. Right bat has potential and he's a projectable mid-high-80s guy on the mound.
As a senior quarterback at Hoover, he set the state record for passing yards in a single season (3,820), shattering the old mark held by University of Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle. He earned all-state honors for 6A.

"If you make every game a life and death proposition, you're going to have problems. For one thing, you'll be dead a lot."
And may I say both were born in the great state of ALABAMA. I will also say that Mr. Wilson is dilusional if he thinks he can play both sports in the SEC now. Things are much different than they were in the mid 70's when Condredge played. The University of Alabama already has a multi-sport player who gave up the draft (likely a mid-round pick) to play football - baseball. He is a back up player in both sports and will likely be one throughout his college career. It was a good sell job by the University, but Wilson is not likely to get very far.

I grew up watching Holliway play baseball, basketball and football at Lee High School (Huntsville, Alabama). To this day he is the best athlete I believe I have ever watched.
