Ant that just the end all, a simple blister?
My son was out for two week last year because he tried to pitch through one. it kept getting worse and worse, until it started to bleed. then they pulled him and told him he wouldn't pitch again until it held.
he tried everything: pickle juice to dry it out, super glue to keep it closed. (in all honesty the super glue worked perfectly, until the coach found out about it. it would be considered as a foreign substance), then he went to the Trainier and they have a substance that dries it out. he went for two weeks until new skin totally grew over the old.

You've got to get to it before it gets bad.

Epson salts in hot (as you can stand) water! Soak your fingers every night till they wrinkle up. Do this when you just start to feel the "hot spot".

If the skin is already torn, epson salts will help, but you've got to keep the the kid away from friction. Friction is what causes blisters, so try and stay away from pitches that rub against the affected area for awhile (don't know how you do that though).

It's got to dry out!

Pop with a sterilized needle, do not tear it open!! Let it dry.

If it has torn open, neosporin, leave it uncovered, if possible. I've even used a hair dryer for a few minutes a couple times a day til it totally dries out. (just be careful to not burn yourself)
Son also carries Nu-Skin in his bag.
The super glue is illegal and we saw a kid thrown out last year for it. I don't know how the ump knew. We didn't say anyting to the ump about that kid. We have a kid that has a blister problem. We used the pickle juice and it worked drying up the blister but we still had to deal with reoccurance. We are trying to get some rodeo salve. Now, having said that, I really don't know what it is but it was recommended by a friend in pro ball. Long story but one of my former basketball players now competes in rodeo and SHE is trying to get us hooked up with a supplier. Has anyone ever heard of using rodeo salve?

Son has had a similar problem last 3 years...incredibly frustrating, and bloody.

Stans Rodeo cream/salve is what Josh Beckett uses - about $30-$40 per small tube, 1 for prevention, 1 for treatment (he uses 1 per week), and it's prescription. If you google it on the web they will have links how to order. We never used it because of border issues.

We did find a pretty good alternative - similar to epsom salts probably. It's caled Domesboro solution, available in any pharmacy - about 10$ for 10 packets. Soak in hot water whenever you can. We used about 1/4 of a small package to about 2 oz of water - re placed the solution every 3-4 days. It's made a very big difference. I hightly recommend trying this first.
Gonna sound weird, but diaper rash ointment. Works great to dry out blisters. I've heard numerous athletic trainers tell their athletes to get it for blisters on the hand and feet. Hmmm.. reminds me I should probably get some for my kit..

I'm a little surprised that the NuSkin would be illegal. But then again there are plenty of stupid rules..

Domesboro solution

My son also used Domesboro solution for pitching blisters in high school. I believe he first popped the blister with a sterilized needle, then soaked it several times per day in the Domesboro to dry and toughen the skin. It really did seem to heal faster that way than without the Domesboro.

One other note, usually the pitching blister is a sign of something a little "off" in his mechanics or grip.

Good luck - it's a tough and persistent problem!

Something else about super glue my wife and I found out the hard way. She had a crack in her heel from dry skin. She asked me to super glue it shut for her. She had heard this would make it heal faster. The next night she is deathly ill and I have to take her to the er. She has blood poisoning and almost dies. She spend a week in the hospital. The doctor said if I had not brought her in that night she would have lost her foot for sure and probably not have made it.

And the worse part is I had to sit there and explain to the Dr why I was gluing my wife's heel shut. The Dr said if there is any amount of infection in the wound and then you super glue it this can happen. Very scary situation.

Wow that had to be super scary. Glad she is doing fine and well now.

Was the infection already in the heel and the glue held it in to make it worse or did the glue cause the infection?
