Our son (2009) went down to Tampa/St. Pete for the Battle of the Underclassmen and had the time of his life. He said "it was just like living a fantasy". He enjoyed every aspect: the facilities (couldn't believe the balls stayed true on a bounce), his coach, the hotel, the other kids on his team, getting to switch hit against good hitting, etc...I liked how the coaches stressed grades with the boys.
We also made it a point to visit two colleges on the way home. Again, we are just starting down this road, but thought it was a good time for a casual visit.
I know there were scouts, but I have no idea who or where they were from. Our goals with him where to see what an event like that is like
(get his feet wet, so to speak), be around kids from other places, and to have fun.
We did take our own water bottle, sports drinks and protein bars for him, due to the heads up on another thread on the cost of concessions.
When I say I didn't have to bug him to write a thank you note, I think all parents get a clear idea just what a great time he had!
