I grew up using wood bats and used to bone them. What I found is that if you are buying a bottom-of-the-barrel wood bat, the grain splits quickly no matter what you do to it. Used to wipe them with linseed oil too, but that didn't help either. Geez, I went through a lot of bats from just the grain splitting.
