In all my years in which I have gone and watch my kids play in baseball and softball tournaments I have never witness what I saw this past weekend in Greensboro NC where a bunch of 18-19 year olds if you want to call them baseball players who are suppose to be in their teens and in college acted like a bunch of five year olds. They where arguing strike three with the umpire throwing their bats and helmets saying the F word so loud that both teams and parents and kids can hear it and nothing was done about it when it came to the coachs it was embarrassing to the parents and for the Palomino League and for Va Beach. As for the coachs it was all about winning. The coach could have pulled those kids but he don't he had thirty kids on that team which was a joke. The teams we play where mostly sixteen and seventeen year olds high school kids and we ten run them each game. The team we play saturday night where kids who are going to play in colleges or are in colleges and our kids couldn't handle real pitching and had to play a team that had talent. I'm sorry to say that it took the umpire to throw the player out of the game because our coach didn't have the back bone to do it. Its all about winning the game. Some of the parents went up to the parents from the other team after the game and apologize and said that we where embarrass that this happen. We'll be playing in a tournament this weekend and those boys are on that roster. Good job coach way to reward them for thier action.

Negative....and Birddog.....

It was Lynnhaven Palomino and the Coach was Billy Phillips, me...

Negative, I won't hide my name...but I know who you are....I don't believe you came up and talked to me if you had a problem....and of course, when we were winning, you didn't have a problem either....you were all smiles.

The kids were talked to in a private setting....and handled in the proper way....not on an open forum.......but you might want to watchout airing dirty laundry because you might find out there is more dirt still out there you might not like.

And if you want to tell the story tell the whole story.....the umpire was not even going to toss the kid until the coach from the other team said something about it.......

Again, if you are so unhappy, email me and remove your kids name from the list for this weekend.....
We played okay....we went 3-0 in pool play.....and 1-1 in the championship round. We as a team, make a lot of mental mistakes....in all 5 games we played....We lost to Greensboro NC Team 5-3.....they went on to win the tournament.

Once we make a few adjustments...I believe we will make a run like we did in 2005. We will be tested again this weekend against some top legion teams in Virginia.

Negitive,
If the umpire threw every kid in every league and every game at this age for saying a cuss word there would be no kids left standing!!
The Lynnhaven Palomino Teams have a history of success and that comes from the Coach. Billy Phillips is out there for the kids and has been for the last 5-7 years. He is a class act and I dont think he needs to take any advise from someone who
assumes before getting the truth.I also might add a
a leader in the military he has the respect and admiration from his team. Why do you think he has so many kids??? That says it ALL.... And its not a perfect world Smile
Billy,

Sorry to hear of your sportmanship issues.
Have to disagree with No Way. If the first player is thrown out or benched for their behavior, most players will refrain. Only when behavior is tolerated will it continue.
Negative, have no fear, when these players go to the next level, much of their behavior will be squashed. Especially when they have a coach like Norbie or when they look on the bench beside them and see a player who is just as good waiting to take their spot.
This is rec ball, where are the parents of these players?

Billy, good luck with the rest of the summer.

Lynn
Been to lots of games and there always seems to be at least one event where a kid loses his cool. This particular kid is not known for this behavior and I believe he was Player Of the Year for a district.
Ive seen coaches in rec ball thrown from games. It happens, but doesnt define a player.

No Way,

My response was in reference to a "bunch" which would indicate multiple issues. I have been to many games where there have been no issues. I have also been to college games where a coach has pulled a player off the field and sent them to the bus for their behavior.
Sometimes, the player who gets tossed is not the only problem, they just become the example by the umpire. The fact that he was a "player of the year" should make him a leader. Perhaps if Billy would have handled one of the first offenders, the kid "not known for this behavior" would have stayed in check.
Negative, reading your post, you made the comment that it was all about winning. What were you thinking? Billy goes out and recruits players, many who have never played at Lynnhaven Baseball and even some that have never even heard of Lynnhaven Baseball. A player can be on the team regardless of any discipline problems. It is rec ball.
To say it doesn't define a player is confusing. It all comes down to holding these children accountable.
Once again, to the parents who continue to allow this conduct from their sons, the shame is on you!

Lynn Metheny
I am the parent of one of the players on the team and this is my first year being on Billy's team and although me and my son did not play in the Greensboro tornament, I find it that Billy has done a great job in getting so many players adequate playing time and still putting a quality team on the field game in and game out. Most of all we have a huge mesh of College and HS players which usually is a tough task to manage due to different personalities and background but he has done as good a job as I have seen. If a player is acting up like I hear here, the parent should act first and foremost and have a talk with his son about his behavior. Again Billy and your staff you have my vote of confidence.
Rlcosta, I too am a first yr parent on this team. I wasn't at the tourny in NC, but have read this thread and as for the discipline debate. It's a part of the game, players and coaches get upset, things happen if it gets out of control they get ejected, serve their sentence, come back and play some more.

I am not condoning poor sportsmanship but its a fact of life that tempers will flare..I am sure that if there were any scouts watching they all noticed and noted what took place.

These kids are young men. It's time for these young men to be held accountable for their actions and from the apology letter that was sent to team it appears that this young man is well on his way to becoming a man and owning up for his mistakes.

I also don't think mommy and daddy should do anything but watch the games

one last thing, I must say though I have been very impressed by how Billy runs this team. He has a lot of very talented players and I have yet to hear any complaints about playing time and more importantly the kids appear to enjoying themselves.

I am sure if the opportunity presents itself next yr my son will want to play for this team again.
Once again this thread was not started about just one player, it said a "bunch".
Holding a young man accountable for their actions is excactly what the answer is. I believe negative implied that nobody was holding anyone accountable.

It would be my hope that even if a coach holds a player accountable, so should the parent.

I guess my feeling is that when your kid can support himself, perhaps that is when mommy and daddy should sit back. None of these kids are even close to there.

Billy, I enjoyed coming to the games tonight. You have some good players. I wish it would have been more competitive. Only one F bomb that I heard and certainly wish the "snuff" was not part of the game! Just hate to see young men with that!

Lynn
Lynn,

Thanks for coming out last night, I always enjoy your views and appreciate your cantor.

You know as I know, that over the past couple of years since 2005 (when Lynnhaven had no program), with the help of our President, Jerry and I have done everything we can to bring an outstanding quality of baseball to the beach area for "ALL" kids at that age group and to give them a competitive challenge as they get ready for their next level...whether it be a senior in HS or freshman year in college....I do not recruit certain kids, I recruit all kids! I do not turn anyone away! This year, we have a range from rising juniors in HS to rising soph's in college......the program has started to recruit itself, which is one of many goals I have.....If I can get kids to want to play "REC" ball, then I think I will be good with that.

Next year will only get better as we add more games, more tournaments, and add our team to the Tidewater Summer League.

You are more than welcome to join us in Williamsburg over the next couple of days....I'm sure you will see some outstanding games.

Billy
Billy,

I am not going anywhere near that tunnel!

You guys have done a great job with that program. I will not even get into the discussion of recruiting until I am face to face with you!

Will have to question you not turning any kid away. You can have them ALL for a certain period and then you are required to have a roster limit. That being said, you will have to cut alot of kids. Let me know how that goes.

Good luck with the schedule next year, that could be very costly. Start finding sponsors now! Maybe some of the posters on here will help. I'll pitch in!
Lynn,

Thanks for the sponsorship.....that money will go to great use.....

As far as excepting every kid, I'm more referring to other programs that elect to hold try-outs at the beginning of the summer and leave the rest of the kids out.

This year, all kids that signed up for Lynnhaven were assigned to play in at least 15 games and will get to play in at least one tournament. And you are right at the end of the summer we too, just like all leagues select an All-Star Team.....to represent our league.....

As far as next year goes......I look forward to bigger and better things to help the kids anyway possible.
In the Palomino Division of PONY baseball, if you knew what we and everyone else are up against when we get to the Region, Zone and finally World Series levels of play, you would understand why things are done the way they are. And for all intents and purposes, we do things about as fairly as anyone does, if not more so. I know that's easy for me to say being the Pres, but I think most would agree.
