Since the start of the 2010 season, the players and coaches have been wearing a 3rd Battalion 8th Marines (3/8) patch sewn on the right sleeve of their uniform in support of Matt Prater, a former player and current U.S. Marine."

Via GoDanRiver - Stafford Post 290’s offense wakes up, rolls to victory over Danville Post 325. Excerpt follows:

quote:
Stafford Post 290 Nationals pitcher Matt Edwards began the slow walk to the dugout as manager Jerry Gernhard took out his starter in the third inning after Danville Post 325 began rattling off two-out hits again off the right-hander.

Edwards’ replacement, southpaw Daniel King, seemed to have better luck baffling Danville’s lineup.

King slowed down Danville’s bats enough to allow the Stafford offense to get rolling as the Post 290 Nationals rolled to an 18-10 victory on a humid Thursday morning to conclude the second day of the American Legion state baseball tournament at Dan Daniel Park.

Stafford (26-0) plays Lynchburg Post 16 (13-7) at 5 p.m. Thursday in a matchup of the two lone undefeated teams in the tournament. Danville (12-8) plays Richmond Post 361 at 1 p.m. Thursday in an elimination game...

For the second consecutive day, the fourth game of the day began and ended on different days. Danville’s offense got off to an equally hot start as the night before, but the Stafford offense exploded for 13 runs between the fourth and seventh innings to back King.

King scattered five hits over 6 1-3 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out four.

The top of the Stafford lineup — Kyle Angelet, Garrett Marin, Jacob Gernhard and Dustin Hunt — combined for 12 hits, 12 runs and 10 RBIs. Marin launched a home run to start a five-run sixth and Hunt added a two-run homer to close out the scoring in the seventh...

I really get a kick out of the Danville coach's comments on "If I would have had ***** pitching" and "his pitchers became victim on a squeezed strike zone". That is why they play the game, anything can happen. My son told me that the strike zone was squeezed on him also, but he made the best of the situation and worked through it. Stafford's starting pitcher is a good player, but he had one of those outings, like anybody could, it just wasn't his day. That is why it is called a team sport, it takes all 9 players with some bench support to make it happen.

Way to go Stafford Post 290, now go to work against Lynchburg tonight!!!

Recap on the Lynchburg - Stafford game via the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star:

quote:
Yesterday's American Legion state tournament winner's bracket final between Stafford Post 290 and Lynchburg Post 16 featured several ties and lead changes before Lynchburg took the lead for good in the eighth, and then held on for an 8-7 victory.

The Nationals' first loss of the season sends them to the loser's bracket final today at 10 a.m., where they'll face the winner of last night's late game between Chesapeake Post 280 and Richmond Post 361.

Kyle Angelet led the Post 290 offense with four hits and Jake Black had two, while Matt Edwards added a bases-loaded double.

"We seemed a little tired and flat tonight," Nationals coach Jerry Gernhard said. "We left two many runners on base. Now we have to get ready to play tomorrow."

Good luck today Nationals - two wins for the title!

From this morning's Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star:

quote:
In the end, the Stafford Post 290 Nationals needed just one more comeback to stay alive in the American Legion state baseball tournament at Danville.

Trailing Chesapeake Post 280 8-7 in the top of the ninth yesterday, the Nationals were unable to score in their final at-bat and lost for the second time in two days to end their title hopes, as well as one of the most successful seasons in Post 290's history.

It was just the second loss of the season for Stafford (26-2), which won the District 16 championship for the second time in three years and had won its first two games in the state tournament.

Things looked good early against Chesapeake. Riding the pitching of Jake Black and the timely hitting of Dustin Hunt and Albert Tejera, the Nationals built leads of 3-0 and 5-3, but were unable to make them stand up.

Black, who defeated Chesapeake in the Nationals' opening game on Tuesday, pitched seven strong innings, while Hunt (two hits) and Tejera (two RBIs) both drove in runs in the first inning to put Stafford ahead.

"It was tough for the kids to lose these last two games," Post 290 assistant coach Bill Marin said. "But it's been a great season for them. I think they had a lot of fun."

Congrats and well done on a great season Nationals!
