About a year ago, my son attend a catching clinic at Missouri State. At the end of the second day this tall, skinny guy walked over from the corner of the indoor facility and said..."Hey Quig....send me your best catcher". Howard Quigley is the catching instructor for most of Missouri States catching camps.
"Quig" sent my son out to catch a bullpen for this tall righthander. After several overhand warmup pitches (with my son not knowing who the unnamed pitcher was) The first submarine pitch came. My son immediately stood up took off his mask and said "Hey you're Brad Ziegler!" The young man smiled and said yeah......and then just kept throwing. When Mr. Ziegler was nearly done, he invited every catcher in attendance (over 30) to come out and catch a couple of pitches. He then hung around and signed autographs for all who wanted them.
This was a highlight of my sons winter.....he got to catch a MLB pitcher! Most of the other catchers as well as all in attendance were very impressed as well. As well as being a great pitcher, young Mr. Ziegler is a very nice, unassuming young man. What a pleasure to see in today's me-me-me society.
I doubt my young son will ever forget Brad Ziegler.
We wish him the absolute best of luck and happiness in the future.
