COLLEGE BASEBALL: Sikorski wins first start since injury

Maybe they’ve gotten used to playing baseball amidst a winter that’s worn out its welcome, but the Niagara Purple Eagles can’t be comfortable in this frigid weather.
A little discomfort is nothing for Niagara pitcher Mark Sikorski, who got his first win of the season Wednesday, shutting out visiting Cleveland State for six innings of Niagara’s 5-2 win at Sal Maglie Stadium.
Sikorski’s last start ended with the sophomore transfer from Canisius facing unthinkable pain.
“In our first outing of the season at East Tennessee State, Mark took a line drive right between the eyes,” Niagara coach Chris Chernisky said. “Broke everything in his forehead (and) his nose.
“He underwent five-hours of reconstructive surgery about seven days later.”
Sikorski, who made four relief appearances before Wednesday’s start, was unavailable for comment after picking up his first win of the season because he had to rush over to campus for a 5:30 p.m. class.
Shortstop Andrew MacDonald shared the Purple Eagles’ excitement with seeing Sikorski back in the starting rotation.
