This weekend we are going out to do maintenance on our field. I was wondering if anyone has any good tips for doing a "makeover" on the mound. Right now the mound is a pretty good size but has NO clay base to it. I don't really have the time or tools to tear down the entire mound and start from scratch but I have been given a bunch of clay and the opportunity to do what I can with the mound. I have looked over the web to find some ideas but I mostly come up with building the mound from the ground up. I will be replacing the rubber, and trying to harden the table area, the pivot area in front of the rubber and the landing area....anyone have any good ideas for doing this? Also, I should mention it's for 16-18 year old kids. Thanks for your help in advance.

It will be very difficult to get the clay to adhere to a sandy soil or regular dirt. Best bet is to remove as much non-clay material as you have the energy to do so. One of those vibrating plate compactors will make the job many times easier. (About $38 to rent) Don't get the clay too wet or you will have a sticky mess. Just keep layering it on and compacting it.
