Cal has made the CWS 3 of the last 4 years now. Imagine if Cal supported baseball like ASU/Texas/Rice, etc. I actually kind of hope the administration shows up and gets serenaded by the fans. Funny how the first ever Super Regional hosted by Cal comes in a year that the program was cut and has to be hosted on the grounds of a program with significantly less baseball history and stature because of Cal's inadequate facilities. There are a few people with a lot of egg on their faces righ now and they should have to walk around with it for a while....

Funny thread.

I support them and think it is a travesty the baseball program was cut. I even forced myself to watch that whole "rap video", but came away not liking it. I know they are only trying to express themselves, but rap is horrible, and having them trying to act like a bunch of street thugs wont win them many fans that don't already support them.
I just wish they had mentioned Title IX as one of the reasons their program along with other teams were cut. I guess they did not want to be un-PC, even in a rap video.

Music marks the time of our youth....we may not like rap, but its their music and their time......

TR's famous quote is not all encompassing, especially regarding frivolous things like entertainment.

We all have entertainment preferences that have nothing to do with our core values/beliefs. To see a bunch of educated suburban kids mimicking ignorant street thugs grabbing their crotches is something I do not find entertaining.
As to the "music of their time", rap is not only passe, but was never the mainstream music of middle American youth. Rather it is/was more of an urban black phenomenon that rebellious white kids in bigger cities latched on to. The supposed godfather of rap just died, and to listen to him, you would think he was a radical black liberation theology preacher. Much of his lyrics were anti-white, yet it was never labeled racist.

Anyway, back on point, the Cal baseball team should be allowed to survive. The only question is how much money and/or political pressure it will take. Every game they win will probably help on both accounts. Hopefully their next music video will be country themed, or maybe even Christian rock. Either would be preferable to rap in my view.

Vector- I completely disagree with your stance. While you personally may not like rap at all, to say that it demeans the integrity of those engaging in the activities is absolutely incorrect. In fact, I think your post comes off as very naive. Not every rapper is an "ignorant street thug", and not every college baseball player is a "bunch of educated suburban kids".

Rap music is largely part of the culture of the time. Embrace it or not, it's the truth. Young people sure did love Elvis and The Beatles..and their parents hated it. Seems like deja vu all over again...for better or for worse.

As for the entire reinstatement situation...Go Bears!

I was certainly using generalizations that will not apply to every Cal baseball player or rapper. Regardless, if you act foolish many people will think of you as a fool. Now in this situation I understand they did it to express their frustration, but grabbing their crotches multiple times or pretending to flash gang signs like most rappers do is demeaning in my view. Granted not everyone thinks like I do, but there is a segment of the population that hates what rap stands for, and will be turned off by the genre they chose.

As to your Elvis and Beetles reference, it is not even close other than parents objecting. To the best of my knowledge those artists did not sing about killing cops, degrading women, hating white people, etc.
I am sure some kids listen to death metal(i.e. pro-satan) or racist rock(i.e. pro-Nazi music). Had the Cal kids chosen to mimic either of those musical genres, I'm sure some people would speak up against their choice.

Personally I don't hold it against them, as I'm sure they are just a bunch of kids trying to save their team. I am just expressing my point of view on the method they chose to use.
I personally enjoyed the Cal Baseball Rap Video. I viewed the video twice, and I didn't see any occasions where the players/rappers degraded anyone in the video. The kids had fun; they did a great job getting their point across and no doubt increased their Fan Base in the process.

First, let me preface my remarks by saying that I'm a Rock guy (Classic & Alternative)...Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc...and the last couple of years my wife has even turned me on to her country music (I must be getting old?). I grew up in the infancy of rap during the 80's. Honestly, who could have predicted the popularity of rap to explode like it has the last 10-15 years and expand to white suburban America? It looks like Rap is here to stay!? My son has over 1000 songs on his IPOD, and seventy percent of his collection is some form of rap. It doesn't bother me. He's pretty well rounded with rap, rock, and country on his IPOD. He's not going around getting in trouble, cursing at his parents. He gets good grades and is a great kid. Do I like all of his music? No. However, more than likely it will withstand the test of time and be around when he's a dad in the future. Ironically we had a conversation coming home from a baseball game Thursday night. I admitted to him that Rap would be around and remain popular for the youth in America. But I told him that I don't see him getting down to Eminem, DMX, and Lil Wayne type musicians in the future, when he's a young father raising his own children. Of course, he disagreed with me! Smile

It appears that my Anteaters are in trouble? If their run is over, our household will be pulling for the Rap Stars from Northern California...Go Cal Bears!
My goal in making my personal observation was not to turn this into a pro/anti rap discussion.
I suspect we might have differing opinions as to what constitutes rap vs. say hip hop/dance music. In my view rap is more of the hard core stuff which has negative themes like I mentioned before. I doubt you would be ok with your kid listening to anti-police, anti-white or anti-women rants disguised as music.

As to whether rap will stand the test of time who knows. I am sure many people of the 70's thought disco would be around forever. Thankfully it is just a music history footnote. Since hip hop is popular now some may think it will last forever, but I doubt it. I'm certain rap will not because of all it's anti-societal themes.

Heck, if you think about it, only classical music seems to have stood the test of time.

Hey Woody,

I have no idea who Michael Peterson and the Drink, Swear, Lie, and Steal song is? Mel Tillis...those were the days that many of the people my age strayed away from the country music scene. A few country musicians crossed the line into country pop early on, but not enough for me to jump on the bandwagon. Smile

I'm not quite a California Country Boy yet, but my wife is trying! In the last couple of years we've seen Carrie Underwood open for Keith Urban, LeAnn Rimes open for Kenny Chesney, Gretchen Wilson and Elton John in Vegas (two separate weekends), and in between these concerts we had fun with a little Motley Crue, Bon Jovi and a few others! Simply stated...we like good music. Country, Rock, Pop, it doesn't matter!

I also love great baseball and I'm enjoying the Super Regionals...Go Eaters! clapping
Hey Vector, you are certainly entitled to your own opinion. I think you are confused between what rap music and gangsta rap music is.

Rapping is one of the elements of hip hop as well as the distinguishing feature of most hip hop music. It is a form of rhyming lyrics delivered rhythmically over a musical backdrop of sampling, scratching and mixing by DJs. Originally, rapping was called MCing and accompanied DJing. Early raps were frequently merely a sequence of boasts, or attempts to upstage the other MCs.

What the Cal baseball boys did here was more of a parody of rap. They looked pretty square to me! Looked like normal college kids, baseball players, The Blues Brothers and Wally Cleaver.

And as for grabbing themselves, well that is part of baseball by my way of looking at it.

Did you know there is an entire musical industry out there that is referred to as Christian Rap and or Christian Hip Hop, check it out.

Everytime I watch the video it makes me smile
They are hilarious!
