Let's give credit where credit is due! Please nominate any player who "Did his job" on the field extremely well this week. Mental skills are always important, but particularly in the post-season!

This award will not be given out solely on stats, although consideration will certainly be given to athletes who were "in the zone" and had great stats. I am also looking for the athlete who does the "little things" right, displays leadership, and/or overcomes adversity -- whether from self, opponents, umpires, teammates, fans, bad luck, or whatever. Please reply with your nominations on here or through my website CoachTraub.com

The winner receives a UIL compliant award that I am sure he/she will like.

Congratulations to last week's winner:
Lindsay Collings, Softball P from McKinney North.

Enjoy your job. Know your job. Do your job!

I would like to nominate Forney Senior pitcher Vance Woodruff. Vance was called upon in the third game of the series with Mesquite Poteet in the Region II Quarterfinals. After a good first inning, Poteet appeared set for another big game against Forney, scoring one in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth. Forney managed to finally get on the board in the bottom of the fourth, getting to the Poteet starter for three runs. At this point, given the first four innings of Poteet offense, one would (as did I) presume that there was more to come, especially since Vance had already thrown 92 pitches.

He faced only four batters in the 5th, giving up a walk and a stolen base with one strikeout, throwing 22 pitches. In the sixth, he faced, again, four batters, the top of the Poteet lineup, setting them down with a walk and one strikeout on 17 pitches. On offense in the sixth, he singled with one out and scored from first on a game tying double. He then retired the side in the top of the seventh with one strikeout on 12 pitches. Forney then scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh.

When it appeared after the top of the fourth that it was going to possibly be another patented Poteet rout of rival Forney, 4 runs, 7 hits, 6 strikeouts, 4 walks, and 92 pitches, Forney scored three giving the Jackrabbits hope. Vance settled in for the next three, bearing down and giving up no runs, no hits, 3 strikeouts, and 2 walks on only 51 pitches (total 143 pitches for the game). This demonstrated that he did not quit and indeed did step up to give his team the chance to win the game. This was not just a demonstration of his physical skills, this showed great mental fortitude in overcoming what otherwise appeared early to be the day that Forney would be sent home for the season.
Congratulations to Taylor Thompson (Sr at Forney HS) for winning. Taylor defeated Mesquite Poteet in Game 1 of their series by allowing only 1 run and by going 3-4 with a triple. He clearly was not "in the zone" pitching this game, as his curve ball and change up weren't well commanded or very effective. However, he competed with everything he had, and in this case, it was enough to help his team earn a victory.

He wasn't nominated, and I didn't see the game he pitched, but I also want to commend Teddy Nowell of Mesquite Poteet for his superb efforts last week. I saw the two games he didn't pitch, and he was great.

Due to the lack of nominations on here in the last couple of weeks and the impending end of the H.S. season, I will no longer be posting this thread here. However, the award will continue and I encourage you to continue to nominate worthy high school athletes on my website, CoachTraub.com

If you participated in this series of threads by nominating someone or by enjoying reading about someone who was nominated, I thank you.
