Son is heading to a college camp in Ohio on Sunday. It is being held outdoors and will be 38 degrees. Is a knit hat OK? Or should he stick to a baseball hat? He isn't asking, I am. I just found out it will be outdoors.

I was just in Ohio for a funeral last weekend and it was very cold outside. I'd stick to a baseball hat, and some very warm layered clothes including smartwool (brand name) for merino wool. https://www.smartwool.com/ Merino wool is great for outdoor activities, and it keeps you warm and dry. My wife and I used it hiking the Swiss Alps last year. Highly recommend it.
Good luck!
Relax he is young, he can handle it. Look like a ball player who is going to crush it!!!
Maybe you take a small knit hat, in case he looks around and sees everyone else wearing them. But I agree, he'll be fine either way.
Ok thanks!
It's makes me laugh but some kids wear what's called a balaclava under their baseball hat here in the Northeast. Like a thin hood that can cover your mouth and nose if needed and your neck.
I'd recommend coldgear long sleeve & leggings under baseball pants.
Is this by chance at Dayton?
My son did a camp there in February 2023. Nobody was told that it was going to be outdoors ahead of time. It started at 9am & was 31 degrees, got up to mid 30s as the day wore on. Camp was 5 hours, entirely outside. Many kids were unprepared & only wore the free camp t-shirt, luckily my son had a coldgear compression shirt with him to wear underneath. The coaches were in parkas with winter hats/gloves.
Camp started with running the 60, the turf was still covered in frost & everyone slipped on the start. They did a scrimmage in the 5th hour after much standing around & freezing. Each kid got 1 AB, and they didn't know when they'd be up, so had to jump in cold from the field with no time to get warmed up.
The whole camp was counter-productive due to the cold. My son was so mad & frozen afterwards, we skipped the campus tour & headed home.
Wow, that's interesting. It is at Dayton, Start time is 11:30. I believe it is a new coach this year though....
Bring a coat for the standing around times. Also those Hothands are always helpful; put a few in the backpack. You can also put them in a sweatshirt's front pocket, and no one is the wiser.
Take a stocking hat and have him throw it in his bag. My son played college baseball here in Ohio. They were issued stocking hats as team gear and that's what they wore almost every outdoor practice before the season got going. I'm sure the Dayton guys that are there will have stocking hats on. Ohio kids can handle cold....but they're not crazy lol

What would do if they use "wood" bats? We did at MSU in the last Century.

My son loves using wood, but not when others are using something else. He plays in a wood bat league in the summer during the week when not traveling with the summer team.

Good call with the hot hands, I’ll have him take a few.
