As I've mentioned ad nauseum, living overseas has its drawbacks, one being that 'recruitability' is compromised. My kid is a sophomore this year. There are 8-10 small-mid schools he's interested in. Being that we're out of the country and all, would there be any major drawbacks to him sending letters of introduction to these schools' coaches as a soph? I just feel like a little head start might not be a bad idea in our situation. Do you think this would be okay? Would most coaches be cool with it?

Krakatoa,
I agree with RHP05parent. I think that's a great idea. I personally would capitalize on the "out of country" status and use it to my advantage. If nothing else your son’s situation is unique and will make an impression. I don’t know everything about your son’s situation but I would clarify on the front end any concerns you THINK the coach might have about travel, passports, citizenship, academic core credits, etc.

In this case, It wouldn't hurt to put together a tape of him taking some grounders, swinging, throwing, etc.... It can be homemade, just enough to show arm strength, footwork, batspeed, etc.

Obviously, once a coach reads his letter (and he tells him he has a homemade tape available, he'll understand that it can't be professionally made over in Korea) it gives him something to go on... if you can establish a relationship, then it may be time to do a summer camp at the colleges that seem interested and open to not being able to scout him directly.

I feel he'll need to participate in one of the college summer camps so the coaches can get to know him better.
