So the kid decided in the fall, after the first team meeting, that he was done, that he no longer felt the kind of burning desire that was necessary to compete at the college level.

So he hung up his cleats.

He's home for the weekend and tells us, for the first time,  that he can't believe how much he misses it.   Apparently he's  been in touch with some of his old coaches, trainers and instructors.  One of them has found a spot for him this summer in a competitive men's league that allows a limited number of college players per team.  He's  going to spend the rest of the school year getting back into game ready shape and play in that league this summer.

He says this isn't about playing for his program again.  He has no illusions that the coaches would  welcome him back anyway, not after he told them he was done, and not after missing a year of development anyway.   Says he's not sure he would even want that.  But he can't believe how much he misses being between the lines.   He said the intensity of it took him by surprise.

Hey Slugger,

Need my coffee to figure out what's going on with this post.  Your son quit the team & now misses it? Well, have him check out the College's Club BB scene. Sounds gr8 with summer league. The big question is can he play at the performance level as his collegiate peers? I don't want to be harsh here but I doubt it. Definitely not at that school. His reason he gave to the coach and the fact that he "wasted" a roster spot in that coaches eyes pretty much closed the door imho. Maybe I'm wrong. Now as far as training. Those boys have a year of college level strength & Conditioning under their belt. (Pretty intense). They have physically improved immensely. I would tell your son to stay involved in this great game in any capacity he wants. I just think his ship has sailed as far as playing at that level again. Best of luck.

Good to hear. After son graduated, and ball was over, he just did not want to talk about playing. A lot of people talked about him trying out for some of the low level independent leagues. Think Pecos, and the leahue in New York, He just was not intersted. A month ago a coach from the local mens league called. My son is excited about playing again. olus he is coaching for his old HS. He is an assistant for the Freshman team. I am glad he is getting involved in baseball again. It just took time.

I am glad SluggerSon, is playing again. I am surebhe will have a good summer.

Just because a player does not play at the highest level, few do, does not mean that they were not a sucess.

That's awesome, SD.  If by "home again", you mean between the lines again, heck yeah!

The challenge after HS/college is finding an environment that is reasonably competitive still and it sounds like he did.  There will likely still be an adjustment period being around some who have baseball as a low priority.  But, still...

I think it's kind of like divorcing your devoted wife of many years, who has been with you through thick and thin.   You think the feelings gone.   You split.   Only to discover that the former wife is an eliminable part of who you are.   Don't think he realized how deep inside his soul baseball ran until he decided to hang up his cleats.
