Friday, May 30, 2008
Southlake Carroll is going to the state tournament for the first time as a 5A team after defeating Flower Mound, 4-3, on Friday afternoon to sweep the Class 5A regional finals.
With the game tied 3-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Dragons scored the go-ahead run on Shaun McPeters’ second RBI-double of the game.
Carroll starter Ross Stripling, who finished with 10 strikeouts and threw his fifth complete-game of the playoffs, retired the side in the seventh and Carroll (22-18) stormed the field in celebration. Carroll jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.
After the Dragons scored one in the second, Ronnie Mitchell drilled a two-run home run in the third.
Flower Mound (22-16-2) responded with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth but that was all the Jaguars offense could muster against Stripling.
It was Flower Mound’s deepest playoff run since it lost in the championship game to Corpus Christi Moody in 2004.
