MST and I are of one mind on this....I dont permit much interaction between players..(catcher and batter)....but in many of my areas, I have to be careful as many of the players go to different HS's but play on the same summer league teams and as such are friends outside of HS baseball....

In that case, I allow friendly banter.....
I don't hear enough chatter between the catcher and the batter. I was a catcher "back in the day" and always talked to the batter. It was part of the game.

As long as the catcher doesn;t say anything that is derogatory, mean spirited or swearing, I do not say anything.

I also agree with piaa on this, many of the HS players have played with players of the opposing team in summer league or AAU teams and some of the bantering is friendlier, which falls well within my parameters.

nothing really witty, but I worked behind a kid a few years ago who sang showtunes all game long. Stuff like the Oklahoma! theme and Jesus Christ Superstar, it was rather humorous, but I don't think it was directed at anyone, he just sang (outloud) to himself all game long.
We had a fairly strict umpire yesterday who didnt allow much of that. The thing is I knew 4 of their players so they didnt mind.

My best friend goes to a school we play about 4 times a year.He is a huge fan of manny ramirez,Im a vlad guerrero fan.We get into those type of things all the time.Usually the umpire laughs when he hears what we say to each other.Heres a good one: We had been messing with each other the whole at bat(yes I was still focused). He gets a fastball in and turns on it,he hits within feet of the foul pole, but it went foul.I told him "vlad wouldve hit that fair".The umpire had a good laugh.
