Have you talked to your coaches about what you need to work on? Without seeing you in person I have no idea what you do well and do not do well. Obviously you do alot well with a pop time like that.

My point was if you have not had any coaching and have not been told what you need to do to improve and you are already throwing like that you do indeed have a great arm. Of course there is alot more to catching than throwing but thats a great start.
Baseball, you do indeed have a lot of great potential behind the dish and I'm almost certain that you will receive a ton of advise here on how to improve. I like your attitude of wanting to become better. It shows a lot of character on your part.

FYI, Coach May is a very respected high school Coach on the East coast and his praise of your talents would humble even me. I know you are new here but just thought you might like to know who some of the experts and guru's are on this site.

Good luck son on your ambition and drive.
Baseball,

Was the 1.95 timed during a game? between innings? a showcase?.

If that is a between inning warm up throw or a showcase throw then I feel that while you have exceptional arm strength, the 1.95 indicates you are taking too much time to get the ball in the air.

80+ MPH from the crouch with good mechanics should yield much faster then 1.95 if this is a warm up or showcase throw.

So tell me what is the situation when you can achieve these times?
Who measures your pop time? And velocity? As asked when was this done? You would certainly be in the top range of catcher prospect in the country if you have other tools. Are you actively looking at college options? Are you you doing showcases? Quality catchers are hard to come by so take advantage of your gift. Get some private instruction, it is out there if your coaches are not helping you with that talent you are going to have to go out on your own.

60 yd lhh-1st rhh-1st velocity pop
Average 7.5 4.7 4.8 78-79 2.20
Above Avg 7.1 4.4 4.5 85-86 2.05
Oustanding 6.8 4.2 4.3 90 1.90

you fall in the well above avg range as far as your pop goes
6.85 4.25 4.35 89 1.95

just fyi...
The quickest way to improve your pop time is to improve your catching mechanics. Arm strength is harder to improve and takes much more time. Part of the pop is indeed arm strength so you should always be working on improving your arm strength. Thera Bands , Core work , Long Toss , Weight Training , Agility work etc etc.

Properly receiving the baseball will allow you to be in the proper start posistion to make your throw. The transfer is where alot of guys gain and lose time. And you footwork is very important as well. Pitchers should have pitching coaches. Catchers should have catching coaches. Its very important imo to have someone work with you on a routine basis to help you to continue to improve. Good Luck
I have seen info but was wondering what the best pop times would be given certain velocities combined with excellent mechanics. My son is a couple years away from HS still but I found this an interesting topic since he has started catching at U13.

Example at 60 mph, 65 mph, 70 mph etc... Based on excellent mechanics what should the pop time be at velocities as the velocity increases.

I hope I am being clear on my question.

We just attended a tryout where the best U13 pop time was 2.44 sec. at 64 mph and the second best pop time was 2.53 at 58 mph. 2.53 was consistently to the bag and 2.44 was a little high and to SS side. Both kids throw at least 6 mph more across the field.

Thanks!

Next time you are watching a mlb game or college game keep a stop watch handy and turn on the Tivo. Check there pop time when the make a good throw down to second base. You will be surprized at there times when the pitch is perfect and the throw is on.

best pop time I seen in game is a 1.9 perfect throw and with a good fast delivery from the pitcher.

scouts should be looking at you, if not you are not promoting your self enough to the right people.

drill
Thats great advice, Jerry. I find that on the tougher pitches your feet still move at the same speed as if it were a room service fastball but it takes a fraction longer for your arms to get set to throw, and shoulders. It really throws off your release point and hence, erratic throws. Bottom line is you got to have control of the ball before you throw it.
Baseball-Life,

If you want to go on to college, your grades are more important than pop time. My up and coming senior son has been timed at 1.89. Not a single offer from any program, has a 2.8 GPA. Been to all the big showcases, Area Code etc. He has had some interest by baseball scouts though but we won't hear from them until his senior HS season. I hope for your sake that is one area you have been working hard on, its tells everyone you are a go getter hard working individual.

Good luck.
