Catchers Thumb Splint

There are a lot of catchers who wear a Catcher's Thumb (www.CatchersThumb.com). Some players use them after they have broken, hyper extended, or bruised their thumb, but the majority of people who wear them use them for preventative reasons.

I wore one when I was a player and all of my catchers except for 1 have worn them for the past 5 years.

When I interned in professional baseball, all of the catchers were wearing one. In fact, often when we signed a new catcher, that was one of the first things done: have one made if they didn't already have one. They're pretty easy to make if you know what you're doing.. I think a couple of them had 2 or 3 of them in their bag..

Great! I got a couple for my son and he used it last night for the first time. He keeps asking "are you sure catchers wear these". A 16 year old is more concerned with style and looking cool than doing what works. There are two pitchers on his high school staff that are quickly approaching 90mph so he needs this.

I think I might get a couple for my catchers. We got a guy who can throw mid 90's and I spent a lot of time last year taping my starters thumb. I'm assuming this will do a much better job.

Question - when you fold it over on itself after putting it into water does it join together or is there some sort of separation still there? Does that make sense?

I wish they had these things back when I played. My thumb still hurts when I catch balls a certain way.

coach, what kind of material do you have available? If you are using something like orthoplast, it will harden and come together but there is that chance of it breaking that connection.

There are instructions on the internet on how to make these, but I don't have a link handy..

I don't have anything at all. I was going to just buy these things and use them. I might be able to pilfer through our trainers room and see what she has. But she may whip me because she's a mean old lady. I'll have to do it when nobody is looking.

I tried to order two of these but it keeps rejecting my card. I know it's a good card and the information is entered correctly so not sure of what the problem could be.

I got two of "The Catchers Thumb". It's a square piece of themoplastic splinting material. First use a paper towel and cut to the shape needed.
Then heat up the material under hot tap water to soften enough to cut. Then hold it in a pan of hot water with tongs. Not boiling water but hotter than tap. Then mold it around the thumb. Reheat the parts you need to cut off until it's right.
