There are surveys done all the time by the media..They survey the fans and the players...many times CB comes out lower rated by those surveys...calls go against the home squad or home fans and you get biased ratings....

But the evaluations done by MLB which are done by electronic and by onsite evaluators, have rated CB Bucknor worthy of post season assignments...

If you are looking for us to criticize Bucknor, you will probably find that most of us feel it is hard to criticize one of the 68 best umpires in the game...

This kind of reminds me of the thead in the general column a few months ago where some poster here wanted members to rate the worst MLB player....I responded that I wish my son had the opportunity to be one of the worst MLB players......to me it was like asking me who is the ugliest girl in the Miss Universe pageant.....

If you asked some of my lawyer friends (including a retired judge) they'd probably say "Your Honor."

UMPs they are all bad aren't they ?

The funny thing about umps is that they are drawn from the same species that the players, coaches and managers are drawn from. As a result of that, we are susceptible to making mistakes. I would say that most of us try to do the best job possible.

The MLB umpires did not end up in the MLB as a fluke, it took them years of quality, hard work in the minors to get to where they are.

I surely wouldn't listen to a survey of the fans. Players maybe, but definitely not the fans. They're the same bunch that votes for the All Star teams.

Players are just as unreliable. Remember that in their surveys, for years, Joe West was rated both as one of the best ten and one of the worst ten umpires.

Obviously, as with any vocation, some practitioners are better than others. But to reach the Majors, each of the umpires have proven themselves to be among the best there is.

I would dispute that but I understand your point. There are some that shouldn't be working games but I think they are the exception, not the rule. I agree the MLB guys are pretty darn good. When you consider the speed the game is at that level they miss very little.
i appreciate the time the youth and high school umps put in but honestly every game i would leave shaking my head about how bad they were it was ridiculous the lack of knowledge of the strike zone. It wouldn't surprise me if CB Bucknor is bad. Why is it impossible for a mlb ump to be bad if that many people think he sux he must.

Let's put some thought into this. If you pitched 10 games and you left each one shaking your head and had a different plate ump each game there might be another thing to look at. You were the common factor in each game. So maybe those guys were doing a great job and a teenager who has absolutely no training in umpiring might not be the one who is right here.

I believe the definition of bad for a MLB ump might be different than the definition of bad for the recliner ump.

Let's consider your post in light of your profile:

"i play baseball, and coach. Sometimes i need to be humbled and put in my place but if you make a smart mouth comment i will give one right back to you. People on this site are too serious so its fun to mess with em."

So, you think the umpires who work your games are not up to your calibre. At the same time, you come here to "mess" with those of us who take our avocation seriously.

Which is it, kid? Do you want self-taught umpires who persist in their ignorance of mechanics and rules or do you want umpires who take their jobs seriously enough to undergo competent professional and amateur training and seek out others with whom they can dialog and continue to improve?

I have worked in three states and at the HS, College and professional levels. I take what I do seriously. I've always believed that players and managers deserve umpires who are serious and who will work and study to improve and give their best effort. If you really prefer to "mess" with them, you deserve the umpires you apparently get.

i wasnt talking about umpires when i pitched i am talking about the club ball umpires and umpires i had coaching high school. I am not talking about college or pro umpires just when you pay guys 70 bux to umpire your game and they do shotty it makes me mad. I dont feel however umpires really ever effect the outcome of the game even if they are kinda bad. Frosh and club ball umps like to call strikes at the ankles and a couple inches off the plate which i never got and most of them did that. Dont take everything so personal jimmy sheesh if you are a high level ump like you say you are probably a good one.
