We have been told by a couple of sources (cant verify if they are legit) that there is a chance junior has what it takes to enter the draft and do well. Where is the best place for him to showcase his skills to see if he has pro potential? He has signed with a good D-1 program and I want him to go to college however he wants to know if he has any chance. We have received an invitation to the PG World Showcase in Ft. Myers in January. (My guess is that everyone gets that invite) Is this a good event for this type of evaluation? Thanks in advance. FYI; RHP in the low 90's, 6'2" 185. Great change, good curve, slippery slider.

Lovethegame2..First Congratulations to your son for getting the chance to go to a D1 College! I do not think that everyone gets an invite from PG especially for the World Showcase. Any which way, that would be a perfect place to showcase his skills in front of Pro Scouts. Good Luck!

Unlike football one doesn't enter the draft. All it takes is one scout to beleive in you and one GM to agree.
I suggest that you sit down and do your homework regarding how the draft works and there should be a discussion at some point what it would take to give up going to college, that pretty much will determine whether he will be drafted or not.
Congrats on signing.
Hi!
Based on our experiences, the best way to gage pro interest is by the number of pro scouts that contact your son, especially in the spring. Most of their evaluations will take place during your son's spring season. Some clubs may invite you to a private workout in late May or June, but neither of our sons' drafting clubs did.

My only concern about attending a showcase before your son's spring season, especially if he's already signed a NLI, is the risk for injury. Not sure its worth it, just to know if he's being considered for the draft. I would think pro scouts have already seen him. They will contact him in the spring, if he's considered a pro prospect.

Thank you for the feedback. Junior is somewhat of a late bloomer and probably isnt on too many pro scout radar grids. I wouldnt think that throwing to 6 batters in a PG World Showcase presents to much injury risk. The kids arm is loose and he has never even had a hint or soreness. He also recovers quickly and throws CG's with low pitch counts. I read one strong endorsement for the event but the majority of comments infer he should get or be noticed in the Spring. He attends a small High School where I dont think he'll get much if any attention. Should we just wait until Summer ball or invest in the opinions now?
Is low 90's cruising velo or is low 90 what he has hit?

Since your son has signed this event would be purely for scouting purposes, no one can advise you, it's up to the individual player.

What does your son really want to do? Does he want to play proball or go to college? Or does he just want to find out if he's pro material? Again, that will be determined by the scouts who will come to see your son in teh spring. If you want to get him on the radar, than go, but make sure your player is ready to showcase.
Lovethegame2 - I don't think the scouts will have any trouble finding a kid over 6 ft. tall throwing 90 or more in the Spring...small school or not...especially in "The South" as your location says. If a D1 found him, the scouts already know about him or will find him.

College/pro decision is a complex one for most families. College is more than just college...its an experience and a foundation for the future. Pro ball is much more than just playing ball...its also a (different) experience and a (different) education. I have difficulty finding words to describe the significant differences.

Attending a showcase is fine. You will find some answers there, but not all. I may be right or I may be wrong...but the tone of your initial posts suggests to me a certain 'innocence' and I will guess(?) that you will have to educate yourself and overcome that 'innocence' between now and decision time.

Good luck! Wink
