I am a freshman who usually closes for my team throwing good velocity, around 83-85. I have been relying on my curveball as my main offspeed pitch but I have a tendency to hang it a lot and when I hang it, it usually gets crushed. I have been working on developing a good change up and when I throw it in bullpens, it is sick, but when I get on the mound in games and I am warming up before an inning I will throw it and it will slip and go way above my catcher, I have no confidence in it and the only way I can throw it accurately is if I slow down my arm which is not good. I throw a circle change with my pointer finger and thumb in a circle and the other 3 fingers on the horseshoe. If there is anything that will help, please let me know. thanks

It's just a mental thing for you it sounds like. Put a batter in the box during your bullpens when you want to work on the change. Many pitchers are great until a batter steps in, some cannot get by the fear of failure at that point and they try to make "perfect" pitches, or they nibble around the plate.

A Change-up is a "feel" pitch. You have to throw it alot to get a comfortable "feel" for it. Keep throwing it every chance you get, just mix in a batter sometimes in your bullpen work, you get comfortable and confident with the pitch before you know it.

Good Luck
Here is another grip to mess with...3 fingers (like a 2 seam grip) with thumb pressed into seam of horseshoe. Throw it with the middle set of knuckles in contact with the baseball. Do not jam it back into your hand, keep some space between your palm and the ball. You should be able to get some good action on this. Also, you can try to throw it harder.
Redbird, it is what I believe in. I have done both. However, I have found the most success with the toe drag. We seem to get a lot of out with it and it is taught that way at several college clinics I have attended. We had an area clinic comprised of former St. Louis Cardinals. I asked the question of them and they also threw that change. That was enough for me. Redbird, I have been lucky enough to have some pitchers play professional and a couple of them are on the 40 man roster or in the Majors. They are still throwing that change. I do understand your concerns on the toe drag.
