I've seen some changes to the site in the past couple of days and wanted to make sure the site did this rather than me having some sort of virus or add on.

When I first bring up the main page after a few seconds the whole screen slides down and an ad pops up in the space vacated. Also yesterday and today when I first get to the page where it has the forums listed another screen or another page pops up for a survey. Before the survey page opens there is a pop up box that appears that says something along the lines of "Congratulation HSBBallweb person you have been selected to fill out a survey". When I click OK the survey page opens and a voice starts telling me stuff about the survey and at the end I have the opportunity to get something free.

Does this happen to everyone or just me? If it's just me does anybody have any clue as to what I've done and how to get rid of it?

If it's something the site is starting to do for whatever reason I'm cool with it but just wanting to make sure it's the site and not a virus or something else.

Well that's disheartening to hear. I'm running a virus scan right now.

Funny thing is as I'm typing this an ad for Netflix just pushed the page down. Now I got a voice that says Congratulations I just won something.

This ad is just above the Perfect Game banner at top. To me it's obvious the ad is not part of the HSBBallWeb site.

I'm not very computer savvy so if anybody has a clue on what's going on I would surely appreciate it.

Does the ad promise to improve your coaching skills? Big Grin Just think of it as being one of the lucky guys in the census that got to fill out the LONG FORM.

Seriously, try bookmarking a different page and going straight to a forum page (like the general forum). I go straight in to the Texas forum, never had a problem.

Coach,

You sound like me trying to navigate on the computer. angry Seriously though, my wife and I pay a few extra dollars per month through our service provider (Verizon) for additional customer service help...it's worth the money, especially if you lack patience like I do. Big Grin

Good luck, I certainly hope you don't have a computer virus...it's a pain in the rear!

I'm not getting that either. A little information about your computer might help -

What operating system are you running e.g. Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Mac OS?

What Browser are you using?

What virus control software do you run and is it up to date? Does it look for spyware?

Dang now I'm getting an ad on this box when I'm trying to post a reply. I got a fat guy beating up a yellow lion looking monster advertising Street Fighter II --- sheesh

I'm using Windows XP, I think I have IE 8 and not sure about the virus protection. My ISP does the virus protection. When I put the cursor over their small icon beside the time it says Embarq Online Security.

I hope that helps 08Dad.

Husker I think the guy who wants me to do the survey is the same parent who sent me an anonymous letter in the mail talking about how terrible of a coach I am. Too bad we won the district that year.

Coach, you need to give your players a parent questionaire before you select them. If they come from the hi tech industry, you might want to cut them. Wink

Seriously, can you run a virus scan when you are not connected to the internet? If so, do that.

They can run an online scan of your machine.

Next you might want to download a free virus package from AVG

Lastly try the spyware software from Adaware

Hope this helps,

Thanks a bunch and I really appreciate the help. I'll try these tomorrow because I'm about to go to bed. I'll let you know if they help any.
Coach2709,

What you are seeing is definitely not a part of our website. I agree with the other posters that you must have been infected with adware and/or a virus.

CPLZ,

"Do you guys get Julie dancing across the screen in a hula skirt when you sign on, or is it just me?"

No, you are the only one who sees that. And you weren't supposed to tell anyone.

Julie

P.S. I hate popups and will never add them to our website.

Ha! I've had this jaunty pop up parked inside the Indiana Forum for well over a year now Mom. You, and anyone else, will never find it. There's lots and lots of room to wander and hide in Indiana.

And no, "Olly, olly oxen free!", will not work. I fell for that once in another state's forum and I won't let that happen again.

    With a capital "T"
    That rhymes with "D"
    And that stands for duel,

    Ya' surely got trouble!
Right there in the Twin Cities,

You have adware or what is also called malware.

Some of this stuff can get pretty nasty and slow the computer down to a frustrating crawl and can be extremely difficult to get rid of. Sometimes anti-virus software will get rid of them, sometimes not. Sometimes they also carry an additional virus, sometimes not.

The problem with some of the worst variants is how they embed themselves. They insert themselves in the boot routine so if you don't remove them completely, they just re-install themselves the next time you boot. Many also are active in memory at the time of "cleaning" and some of the files aren't removed and again, the next re-boot, they re-install themselves.

I have had a lot of success with Spybot Search and Destroy over the years and it's what I use personally. Sometimes however, specific tools need to be used in addition to programs like Malwarebytes and Spybot.

Bottom line, if you aren't comfortable going down the path of trying to remove this on your own, it might be worth the 50 or so bucks someone will charge to do it for you.

If you have never run a spyware/malware cleaner before, you will be astounded at the number of problems it will find.

Hope this helps Coach.
Sounds like you need a good spy ware removal program.

You can go to the CNET website and search for some that are free.

You might try to clear your internet cache and cookies, before trying that.
when you have internet explorer open, click on tools. Internet Options, then click on the Delete button, which will bring up another box, named Delete Browsing History, click on the Delete all button. This will remove all of the cookies and tmp memory files on your computer.

The program that I use to clear out Ad ware files is CCleaner.
Hey guys just a little update - I followed the links that 08dad provided and did all the stuff they wanted and I believe it worked out fine. So far (yesterday / today) the ads haven't popped up and my computer is back up to it's regular speed. Hopefully that means I'm out of the woods and everything is good to go.

This just shows how awesome this site is. I've got computer trouble and all you guys jump at the chance to try and help. I've never met 08dad and probably never will but not for one minute did I doubt he was steering me down the wrong road. In fact I didn't doubt anybody on here that offered advice. That is truly amazing thing we can say about each other.

We may not always agree with each other but I really believe there is a connection of some sorts between all of us that allows this trust to happen. MN-Mom that is a true testament to how great of a job you do running this site.

Thanks again everyone.
