Offense gets out for the third time and they are coming out to the field from the first base dugout. Coach is leaving third base box and heading to the first base dugout. During the trip the coach picks the ball up, flips the ball to the pitcher and says something like - "go get 'em", "work ahead", "big inning" or something like that. This takes place between the lines near the mound. Neither coach nor player breaks stride.

Is this, by rule, a trip to the mound charged to the head coach?

If technically it is a rule could you consider this more of a situation where you let it slide / warn the coach and then call it instead of just issuing a trip?

To me it seems like to much OOO (can't remember what it stands for but I know it means going too far in an umps duties without common sense) but if it's a rule then I would like to know for certain so it won't be a problem anymore.

Thanks

Not by any stretch of my imagination would this be even remotely called a conference........

A OOO is an Overly Officious Official.......a person who attempts to insert rules into situations where they were never intended to be inserted or broadly interpret rules to cover their own vision of how the game is to be called....

The only thing that could possibly be driving this is an official NFHS interp from Rumble in regards to teams "Huddling" together before taking the field.

Rumble advises that if the team is huddling between innings that the umpire should warn the coach that any subsequent huddling would be a charged conference....

Regardless of that.......the situation you describe is no way a conference.....This guy isnt a OOO, he is the the king of the OOO's.....

No, The official interp is directed to teams after having batted.....its a speed up issue....a huddle before going on to the field after batting lengthens the time between innings....

Here is the wording

Off Interp 121-155 RUMBLE: after having batted, if a team huddles together before taking the field, the umpire should warn the team that on any subsequent "huddle", the coach will be charged with a conference..

Guys, not wanting to argue with your or be a smart @$$.. just getting an understanding...

If it is a speed up issue... how is the team (not pitcher or catcher) meets in front of the dugout any different than the team meeting before they bat?

My high school team has the 7 fielders meet in front of the dugout before going out to the field between each inning. The pitcher and catcher go warm up as soon as they grab their glove/equipment, etc like normal. But the rest wait and go out together. Are you saying that this could be charged a conference?

Either way, the pitcher gets 5...

lets put it this way, if your team isnt holding up the game, I have no problem with it...if I have to hustle you on the field then it possible....

now I have never charged a conference in this case...just because you can doesnt mean you should...I would just remind the coach to hustle...

My question is what is the purpose of the conference?

Our coach likes the way it looks. Plain and simple... he went out to the College World Series one year and saw one of the Arizona schools do it I believe and we've done it ever since Wink

What we do really isn't a conference, but just the 7 players wait until they are all ready and then run out together. No coach has to be there, etc.

Easy. The team coming into bat isn't causing a delay becasue the defense is running out to the field and the pitcher will take his warm ups. The batter is ready when the the throw goes down.

When the defense huddles, the players aren't getting into position and the pitcher is not beginning his warm ups. That's far more likely to cause a delay.

This isn't new. If it hasn't been addressed in your area, shame on the umps.
