You were taught good baseball by a good coach. What he failed to tell you is that this is obstruction. The coach knows that this is against the rules of baseball but he also knows that most umpires either have other things to look at when this occurs, and/or are too incompetent to make the call correctly. Bottom line, 95% or more of the time, you will get away with this. Just don't go too crazy on the 5% chance that an umpire catches you and has the balls to make the call.
