Good luck to Jake... now matter how much talent he has, and he's got a lot, those on this board know how hard he had to work to get there..

Plano East alumnus Jake Arrieta is scheduled to make his Major League debut tonight.

Arrieta, a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher, won’t be getting an easy matchup, ala Stephen Strasburg against the Pittsburgh Pirates, as the former Panther will make his first start against the New York Yankees.

“Why not bring him (up),” Juan Samuel, Orioles interim manager, told The USA Today. “He’s one of our big guys that we’ll be counting on,”

The Yankees have beaten the Orioles 10 consecutive times, the latest of which came Wednesday night.

“I know we’re going to throw him in the fire against these guys,” Samuel said, “but hey, we don’t get to pick who we play or who we face. “It’s a challenge for him. We'll see how he reacts.”

Arrieta is being promoted from Norfolk, Baltimore’s Triple-A affiliate, where he had been holding batters to a .189 average. Arrieta had a 6-2 record and a 1.85 ERA with the Tides, striking out 64 hitters in 73 innings.

Arrieta’s rise to reach Thursday night’s debut has been steady.

The hurler was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds following his graduation from East in 2004. Arrieta did not sign with Cincinnati, instead spending a year at Weatherford Junior College before being drafted again and eventually transferring to TCU. After playing two seasons for the Horned Frogs, Arrieta was taken by the Orioles in the fifth round of the 2007 MLB Draft.

During his minor league career, Arrieta was also a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team, which won a bronze medal at the Beijing Games.

Now Arrieta will take the bump for the biggest start of his young career, a 6:05 p.m. showdown against New York. Arrieta, whose younger brother Sam is entering his senior season with East, will oppose Yankees starter A.J. Burnett.

P.S. As much time as you spend over in Coppell/McKinney you should consider renting a place in West Plano .....
