We are in a District in NTX that allows incoming Freshman to decide on choice of schools. There are certain variables that come into play when you are rewarde your school choice. Long story short, when looking at different baseball programs within the District I would like to be able to ask the appropriate questions when deciding the best Academic and Baseball program for my son. Can anyone help me with these questions I should ask these coaches?

It's not as easy as just picking your school. You have to put a list together with 1st choice, 2nd, 3rd etc. There are certain variables that come into play when the district looks at your list. You can also transfer during the school year as long as there is room and you did not play on the Varsity team.
TXdrll For a short history on GISD baseball Rowlett & Naaman & South has had the top programs. Usually a dogfight to the end. At Rowlett your son will have the privelage to tryout against apprx 100-125 freshman kids for the freshman team. Unless your son is a real stud!, not just good he will most likely not play on the varsity untill his senior year. Also coach Carmen is the coach and I would go interview some parents of varsity players to get a opinion on him! Coach Roberson is at South and always puts a real good team on the field, he is a good baseball coach. There is not the huge # of kids also. Naaman is a very good program also and their coach is a good coach. Also not huge #`s. As mentioned before at any given year these coaches and staffs could be gone. My I suggest that your son goes to the local high school with all of his friens that he grew up with!! I say this with me being a stupid dad at one point and wanting my oldest son to go to Rowlett where I knew he would win district. I could tell that he really didnt want to go and that he was just going along with old dad and when i asked him he said he REALLY LIKED HIS FRIENDS THAT HE HAD NOW!! That was almost a huge parenting mistake! He went to the lessor school in the district had a great time all district;JUCO baseball scholarship;now playing his senior yr at D1. As been said countless times on these forums If your son is good enough he will play at the next level if that is what HE WANTS. sorry for the ramble just trying to help.
Not from Garland, never plan on moving to Garland and my youngest will graduate from a highschool...NOT in Garland.

Don't let Highheat or anyone influence you regarding schools. Although I feel (IMO) that his advise about Rowlett is WAY OFF base, his advise regarding friends, or what I like to call "the total highschool experience" (academics, social and extra curricular activities) is on target.

Gather info, discuss, let your son think about it...then tell him what you want him to do...just kidding.

Tell him to make a decision that is well thought out and one, that he will not look back on and regret, for any reason.

FWIW- I have met Rowlett coach one time but know many people who know Caoch Carmen well (players parents, other HS coaches, baseball people), none, repeat none, have anything bad to say about him except highheat)
Texan I agree,
Dont forget to add Bellaire to that list.

It amazes me how districts will circumvent the uil when it comes to eligibility issues.

You should play all uil activities for the school that is in your attendance zone period.

That is how most of do it.

Shopping for high school baseball programs???

is this what high school athletics has come to.

My kid played in the summer with some of the Sachse kids. They told me this freshman class is the best yet. The only thing I know about the coach is that he is young. I suggest the same thing as the others, go talk to someone who has played for him. One father did say that they are supposed to be bringing in some famous hitting coach to work with the players. Hope this helps some.
TD - Last year was his first year as a headcoach period. Very enthusiastic young guy. Kids and parents seem to like him a lot, but say he lacks experience at times. Son played football for him in middle school and really liked him. Sachse had a good season last year and I expect they will be fighting for the fourth playoff spot this year.

Last year at Rowlett we had 60 kids try out and about 50 the year before and less than that the previous year. Rowlett enrollment is usually large and just because you sign up to go there you don't allways get in your freshman year. Neighboorhood kids get first priority, if any opening's remain it is first come that gets in until max enrollment is met.
TD-

Three years ago we went through the same thing you are going through. It's a tough thing. We narrowed our choices down to NF and Rowlett. Since we live in Rowlett, but out of the attendance zone, it was our first choice. When we got our school selection in the mail we were chosen for NF. We went through a process and ended up getting into Rowlett.

Along with another family that was going through the same thing, we worked together and ended up gathering enough info that made our son's decisions for them. Both kids had the same goals at the time and that was to play for a winner and have a chance to play for a state championship. Going to school with their friends was never a real issue. As parents we were looking at the academic aspect also. I talked to a friend of my dad who works in the district who had a daughter graduate from Rowlett and he said, without a doubt, Rowlett would fulfill what we wanted academically. He mainly spoke of how good their calculus program was.

To get back on track...I really haven't had many dealings with Coach Carmon other than just some in passing chit chat. But when I have spoke with him he has always been honest and and straight forward. His varsity assistant coach is very good also. A young guy with alot of spark. Coach Carmon expect his kids to do exactly what your boss expects you to do. Always work hard, be productive in the classroom and on the field, do the right thing, and don't embarrass the program.

I have no complaints so far and really don't expect to have any.

Hope this helps.
