My son played for two summers with the Florida Pokers. Many of the games were played on college campuses.
The program was two months long with a 68 games schedule. They traveled by plane (to Omaha) and by bus, sometimes leaving at 5pm for a 14 hour ride. They had strict curfew, no tobacco, no alocohol (but good poker games) and strict dress code on airplanes and in restaurants (dress khakis and team polo shirts). They were given "homework" to do. Each morning uniform dress was posted on the managers door with special instructions. If you missed breakfast and the bus, you might be left behind. You ran in the mornings if you had an afternoon game, rain or shine. You helped with laundry. You worked for a starting position. Some kids dropped out, they really didn't want to spend their summers because to them it was like boot camp. What he was doing was giving them a litle taste of college baseball.
Son called tonight ready to leave for first 4 day road trip, ironing his dress khakis, dress shirts and gathering books for homework. He told me that he was really glad that he had been prepared for the experience and was calling his sumnmer coach to thank him.
When looking for a summer program for your son, try to consider all the opportunities a program has to offer, not just a trophy.

Tiger Paw Mom,

I just wanted to remark that the coach you are talking about is Mike Roberts. Coach Roberts recently retired from the Pokers, but left a legacy of baseball here in Florida.

He was the founder of the Connie Mack baseball in this state. His players all got college scholarships. His players were all good kids. He did a spectacular job.

It was recently pointed out to me that with Roberts retiring I am the coach whgo has coached Connie Mack baseball longest in this state. I hope that I can do half as good a job as Mike Roberts did in his longtime tenure with the Pokers.

Kudus to someone who cares about his players. I'm sure that is one of the reasons they were always successful. The Central Florida Renegades are hosting the Connie Mack State playoffs this year and hope to honor Coach Roberts at some point during the event.
Bob,
I just wanted to post about Coach Roberts because his program left such a lasting impression on my son about what the real purpose of being a coach is all about. Not only did he help most of his players to get scholarships, but many are ML players as well.
He continues to share a special relationship with many of his players.
I hope that when parents are deciding about summer teams and coaches, they consider programs such as this.
Also wanted to mention another coach's son was a team mate of Fungo's son.
