My son played for two summers with the Florida Pokers. Many of the games were played on college campuses.
The program was two months long with a 68 games schedule. They traveled by plane (to Omaha) and by bus, sometimes leaving at 5pm for a 14 hour ride. They had strict curfew, no tobacco, no alocohol (but good poker games) and strict dress code on airplanes and in restaurants (dress khakis and team polo shirts). They were given "homework" to do. Each morning uniform dress was posted on the managers door with special instructions. If you missed breakfast and the bus, you might be left behind. You ran in the mornings if you had an afternoon game, rain or shine. You helped with laundry. You worked for a starting position. Some kids dropped out, they really didn't want to spend their summers because to them it was like boot camp. What he was doing was giving them a litle taste of college baseball.
Son called tonight ready to leave for first 4 day road trip, ironing his dress khakis, dress shirts and gathering books for homework. He told me that he was really glad that he had been prepared for the experience and was calling his sumnmer coach to thank him.
When looking for a summer program for your son, try to consider all the opportunities a program has to offer, not just a trophy.
