Does anyone know how good the school is,how good the coach and the program is, do they over recruit, and does anyone know if it is easy to walk on their? Thanks for any information.
Friend's son tried to walk on last fall along with 14 others, but they all got cut after a few days. Impression that I got was walking on is a longshot unless they have you on their radar from some earlier camp/showcase. Can't answer your other questions.
John runs a very nice program, we've played them each of the last couple of years. They have strong teams year in and year out (last season we won 5-3) but he coaches the game the right way. To my knowledge he is not known as someone who over recruits, but I would say it will be difficult to walk on to any quality DIII team.
But, JT's right....looks like a screename change is in order. (not to mention about about all the letterhead stationery, business cards, etc. that has to be thrown out!)
My son played for CNU several years ago. It's a great school and a beautiful campus. I don't recall anyone ever walking on and making the team unless it was on a temporary basis in the fall. My son's freshman year, there were about 16 other freshman who entered that same year. By the time he reached his senior year, I believe there were only 7 or so of those boys who were still on the team. He loved his playing time there. CNU has gotten more difficult to get into over the last years and therefore some kids who would like an opportunity to play at CNU cannot get in. They play in the USA South conference which consists of only private schools in Virginia and North Carolina. It is a fairly competitive conference which CNU came out on top this year. If you are interested in playing there, you should contact Harvell to see if your position is currently being recruited. Good Luck.
JT, baseball game, Yeah it's taking a little getting used to...after being there for 9 years of recruiting and talking about VJC it's taking sometime to get used to the Stevenson, but we new it was coming...Of course athletically our school has adopted the "there's a new SU in town" (a play on Salisbury who is in our conference) Which is kinda fun...I'm not sure about my screen name though...I've built sort of a rep :-) a good one I think...
I think it's great having a current coache's point of view here. Your posts always seem to be well thought out and helpful....so, no matter what the screen name....keep posting. It's helpful to a lot of folks.
Again, congratulations on the new school name. "A new SU in town".....I like it.
Feel free to PM me with questions; I have a son playing for CNU now and one who just graduated after playing there. Great facilities, wonderful program, wonderful school. Some of the coaches when recruiting refer to having "DI facilities at a D III school", and the baseball program fits that. The USA South Conference is very competitive every year, lots of good baseball played.
They do not over-recruit; walk-ons occasionally make it, but as best I can recall, only 2 total during the past three seasons. Recruited players don't go through tryouts. Players are treated very well. Nice campus, good academics, athletes are well-supported, admission gets tougher every year.
