Wild Card games
TO v Saugus - since neither has a true ace I'll go with TO.

Westlake v El Dorado - I'll go with El Dorado based on poor track record of WL coach.

Vista Murrieta v Fountain Valley - Fountain Valley

Hart vs Bosco - Bosco

Hueneme v Dana Hills - Hueneme if Valdez is ready to go.

Newport Harbor v Roosevelt - Newport Harbor

PolyLB v Corona - Poly

I know so little about some of the teams but sounds good to me. Dana Hills vs Hueneme will come down to who is on for the day. Or maybe who can go all 7 innings until the relievers come in. TO is hitting well right now so maybe. I think Saugus has underperformed and can be dangerous.
For the sake of simplicity I'll just take the home teams in the first round games. Moorpark could be a real wildcard in this. They've got plenty of talent but no real stud pitcher. Swenson will almost always be solid and Higginbotham can be great or can be off on any given day. Barker could be a stud pitcher but he needs to be handled right to get his best especially in a playoff scenario. They remind me of Simi a few years back when I figured they didn't have the pitching to go far. They got a sweetheart draw, built confidence and won it all that year. I'm not sure Moorpark has a sweetheart draw or quite the hitting that Simi had though.

Royal is definitely a potential upset victim once they get past Buckel or if they run into a hot pitcher.

NP has a tough draw.

Okay, I'll chime in. I've been reading the posts from BOF and CADad throughout this season. I don't know much about the Marmonte League, except that there are some pretty good teams out there. My son has played travel ball with a few players in your area, and he keeps an eye on a some of them via Max Preps. We did play Oxnard in the Lions Tournament in San Diego this season, and beat them 14-2 (BTW, their SS is a Stud!). I'm sure they just had one of those games, but our area doesn't seem to get much respect in the Southern Section of CIF. We won 20 games and yes we finished rated #7 in D1, shared the league title (#2 League on tie-breaker), and yet our reward is to play another 20 game winner and highly ranked team? I guess we should be happy that we're at home on Thursday, and hopefully our kids will represent and have a good game. Our #3 league team won their wildcard game Tuesday, and their reward is to play at #1 Orange Lutheran Thursday. It should be interesting, best of luck to you guys and everyone else that has kids participating in the CIF Playoffs!
BOF and CADad, you guys post good info and comments. Having gone thru the playoffs last year and knowing the luck you need along the way, some of us don't want to mess with baseball gods. I hope your boys have fun and success in the playoffs. It was so unfortunate for Valdez to get hurt, some of the boys on that team are friends to my son. I also enjoy the parents of those boys. Good luck and I will comment on teams as playoffs progress.

You're probably right CELTDAD...you never know how the Baseball Gods will react!
I think there are more lurkers in this forum than many are aware of. I know it's the first forum I read up here.

My son plays for Newbury Park, and I've always been happy that we are in Marmonte League. Year in and year out, the skill level and competition in this league is absolutely top notch, and it's anybody's race. Great preparation for kids interested in playing at the next level!

As CADad mentioned earlier, NP got a pretty tough draw. We travel today to play Mater Dei, and my son is under no illusions of the task they are facing. Sherfy will get the start, and if he has his "A" game today, NP's chances are going to come down to being able to score runs by capitalizing on any mistakes that Mater Dei might make. They are a very solid team with no glaring weaknesses, so I'm gonna have to just keep my fingers crossed...

It also looks like many HS teams that Mater Dei has one ace and then a dropoff. One can assume that ace will throw today.

One interesting thing I noted was that Moorpark took their stats off MaxPreps just before the playoffs. Trying to get an advantage by not letting the other team(s) know who has done what during the season?

The play in games make for some interesting strategy options. Let's say you are facing a play in team who used a Tago or Valdez in the play in game. Do you go with your ace or your #2?

Here is a local article that talks about the difficulties getting through the baseball playoffs. I love the coaches comment "what just happened"

"Baseball coaches universally support the argument that taking home a CIF-SS championship trophy is roughly akin to turning water into wine."

"In baseball, nothing is certain. A sport subject to more variables than advanced algebra — hot pitcher, weird hop, unlikely miscue, etc. — just might make baseball the toughest of all sports in which to win a Southern Section championship."

http://www.vcstar.com/news/201...to-cover/?vcspreps=1

Baseball is just not suited for a single game playoff. I know the CIF is having disucssions on how to change it, but frankly I don't think there is a workable alternative because of time/travel constraints. I guess maybe you could have a winners and loosers bracket like they do in LL district tournaments.

Good luck to those in, in my son's case he is done and getting ready for the summer...

That is why our coach does not post stats on Maxpreps ever.

You always have to play to win your next game.

No. 2-seeded Simi Valley Royal turned to ace pitcher Cody Buckel in its Southern Section Division 1 playoff opener against Corona, and Buckel delivered. He threw a six-hitter, striking out nine, as the Highlanders defeated Corona, 1-0.

Top-seeded Orange Lutheran pulled out a 5-4 win over Vista Murrieta on Chase Harrison's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. Santa Ana Mater Dei defeated Newbury Park, 5-1, behind Cory Hahn, who threw a six-hitter.

Moorpark defeated Bellflower St. John Bosco, 6-2. No. 3 Lakewood defeated Thousand Oaks, 5-2. Oxnard got a walk-off two-run home run from Austin Davidson in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Long Beach Millikan, 2-0. Sophomore left-hander Jason Balades struck out 11 and allowed two hits.

In the biggest upset of the day, Dana Point Dana Hills defeated No. 4 Huntington Beach Edison, 2-1, in eight innings. Trevor Scott's RBI double in the eighth made a loser out of Henry Owens, who struck out 11 and allowed three hits. Junior Eric Hsieh matched Owens for eight innings to get the win. Stunner. Now Dana Hills has Peter Tago ready to go on Tuesday.

Placentia El Dorado beat Foothill League champion Valencia, 4-1. Anaheim Esperanza knocked off Valencia West Ranch, 5-4. Jared Ortiz, Nico Rusconi and Allen Sarkissian each had two hits for West Ranch.

Corona Santiago defeated Aliso Niguel, 8-6. Cody Hough went four for four. Brandon Baxter had three hits. Alex Cox got the win and the save. He was pulled leading, 8-1, then had to come back in to close the game.

San Juan Capistrano JSerra got a three-run triple from Clay Williamson in the sixth inning to defeat Temecula Great Oak, 5-2. San Clemente defeated Anaheim Canyon, 2-1. Murrieta Valley defeated Long Beach Wilson, 16-7.

In Division 5, North Hollywood Campbell Hall defeated South El Monte, 12-5. Van Nuys Montclair Prep defeated Phelan Serrano, 9-0. Max Fried, Nick Suniga and Ben McKendall combined on a one-hitter. Max Miller had three hits, including a two-run home run.

Looks like Moorpark's draw may have gotten a lot easier.

Here's a few selected predictions based on little or no knowledge:

Moorpark v El Modena - Tossup. Moorpark seems to have a bit better hitting and their style of play can throw teams who haven't seen it when it goes right. Pitching is the big question though. El Modena seems to be solid 2 deep. Moorpark's pitching could rise to the occasion or could have a bit of jitters. Who knows? Home team probably has a slight advantage in this one.

Royal v Esperanza - Esperanza doesn't seem to have an overpowering #2 so I'll take Royal despite their playoff track record over the years.

OLU v Oxnard - OLU.

Murrieta Valley v Dana Hills - Murrieta, cinderella story over.

Mater Dei v Camarillo - Camarillo as Mater Dei seems to drop off a bit on the pitching at #2.

BTW, when I say I don't have a horse in the race it just means my son is out of HS now. There are quite a few kids at Moorpark and one or two at Royal who played for me a lot or a little in the past so I'd like to see those teams do well and ideally meet in the finals as unlikely as that may be.

Tajun Walker shut down Crespi with a 92-95MPH fastball. My son faced him last year at a tournament and struck out the one time he faced him. Pitch 1 FB away..OK I got this guy, FB away foul tip..I got him...3 FB in off the plate...OK I can hit him...CB starts at him buckles him and K...walks back to the dugout and his teammates are laughing...

Walker was throwing his off-speed pitches well enough to keep the boys off balance. Hie fastball was 94-95 the few times I was standing behind the 10 or so scouts. As I stated before you need some luck on the field and in the draw. Last year we had a better draw and made the tough plays. Yesterday we didn't catch the tough fly ball, when last year we made those plays. All 4 runs in the game were from BB or HBP that where awarded first base before they scored. In my two-cent opinion, the team that plays the cleanest games, hits(duh), and gives the least free bases will win this title. Coach said in the paper that our luck ran out, and someone from the other team complained that we weren't giving walker credit for his performance. That wasn't what he was saying, He just was saying that OUR luck ran out. To win a title that 48 teams start in the tournament is very hard. I feel that 10 or so teams have a legit chance. My son faced Walker 3 times, BB HBP K. He felt he was hitable, but in all fairness we didn't hit him. Good luck to all remaining teams, my pick is chaminade. My son has had a great run and is looking forward to now playing in D1. He would still like to be playing for a second title, but the sting isn't quite as bad when you have a ring already. I'll miss this group of boys, but the great memories will never be forgotten. Still lots of ball in the future to watch with 6-7 boys going on to D1 baseball from this class of seniors. Enjoy the ride parents, its for such a short time of our lives.

CELTDAD,

I watched the LA Times clip of your son's HC being interviewed after the game, easier to see his sincerity on video, instead of reading it in the paper. I agree, I don't think he was diminishing the effort of Yucaipa, in fact, IMO he was giving Walker and his teammates a big compliment. In a single elimination tournament many things have to go your way...pitching, defense, offense, a call here or there...and a little luck along the way! Obviously you guys know that after bringing home the hardware last year.

There was a few big upsets this past week in D1 & D2, and I'm sure we'll see a few more in these upcoming games. Congrats to your son and his teammates on another fine year, and best of luck to him over the next few years in college!
I pretty much agree with CADad. Most teams will be now on their number two pitcher and teams with better overall records generally have deeper pitching rotations which will bode well for them.

I think home teams also have a real advantage, particularly if they have an unusual field....like in the case of Chaminade vs Santa Barbara. Chaminade's field has a high fence that is only 270' in right field, so in this case a clear adavantage to Chaminade over SB who does not have any overpowering pitching. At Yucaipa it will probably be windy if the weather keeps up like it has the past week, so advantage to Yucaipa. Probably the same for Redlands.

Like the article I posted the baseball playoffs are such a **** shoot you never know when you can have a "what just happended" moment. Good luck to the teams left in it.

Took a beating on round of 16 but quarters predictions:

OLU v El Dorado - OLU

Moorpark v Dana Hills - Tossup again. Moorpark used both their pitchers. Higginbotham will probably start and be relieved by Swenson as Barker hasn't pitched in a while. Tago threw Tuesday. Bit of an advantage to Moorpark but they're playing at Dana Hills so bit of an advantage to Dana Hills. Moorpark has really gotten the luck of the draw so far.

Lakewood v Mater Dei - Lakewood as Mater Dei used their stud on Tuesday. Can't believe any coach would throw him again.

Royal v San Clemente - Royal has Buckel on the mound.

I guess the Royal game got out of hand with fans blocking the bus, and yelling insults at the team. What a lack of class on the part of San Clemente's program and parents.

San Clemente is protesting based on the sound of the bat...give me a break. Get a life coach you lost now move on.

Congrats to Royal

...It's not like the "Juiced" bat in question won the game with a HR, or an extra base hit deep to the gap...it was a single! According to the article, the bat has already been confiscated once before and found to be okay. There are so many bats on the market now with distinct sounds, who's to say they can't change a little over time? The young man that owns the bat has three dingers on the year. If he's anywhere near the size he's listed on Maxpreps, it certainly wouldn't seem out of the ordinary if he went yard a few times!

San Clemente should be barred from next year's play-offs. Their coaches should be released as well. They are suppose to be teaching and when the teaching moment presented itself, those coaches taught the wrong lesson.

CIF rejects protest...as expected.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.co...cts-bat-protest.html

The Southern Section has denied a protest by San Clemente over an allegation that Simi Valley Royal used an illegal bat in Friday's playoff victory, citing "Insufficient evidence" to support such a protest.

Royal, on good faith, turned over the questioned bat on Saturday to Easton, which made the bat. Royal Coach Dan Maye said if the bat is returned in time, he expects the player who uses the bat, Ryan Tinkham, to use it in Tuesday's playoff game against Santa Ana Mater Dei.

Sounds like Mater Dei will be able to bring Hahn back for 5 innings for the finals so I'll go with Mater Dei even though Hahn will probably struggle a bit due to being over worked.

I didn't get out to see the games at Storm Stadium this past weekend, but I read the updates on OC Varsity and the LA Times. Cory Hahn rapped up an amazing high school career with a great game on Saturday. The lefty threw 5 Perfect innings striking out seven, hitting a HR, and making an over the shoulder catch in center...not bad for a 5'10" "little guy". And they say size matters!!??

Hahn finished the season 14-1 on the bump with a 0.89 ERA, and hit 10 dingers! No Doubt, the Player of the Year in the CIF Southern Section! He should probably get some love for the Gatorade Player of the year too...at least for California?
Buckel was 12-1 with a 0.61 ERA and .195 OBP against. He hit .410 with 6 homers and played SS when not pitching. I'd say he earned but won't get player of the year, because his team was beaten in the semis when he wasn't pitching.

Amazingly although he was Player of the year in his league he didn't get pitcher of the year so that they could spread the awards around. I thought the kid who got that award was a closer runner up for Player of the year, but Buckel earned the league's Player of the Year so I can see why they did it that way.
Last edited by CADad
They are both undersized and although Buckel is a bit taller he's a RHP. It'll be interesting to see how far down each is drafted. That will most likely determine if they sign or not. I don't think of it as keeping a commitment to their schools or not. It is a given that players are committing only if they don't sign professionally.

It is probably a smart move for the schools they've signed with to go after the "undersized" kids with big talent as they are more likely to get them than the bigger kids with near equal stuff.
