A legend around Cincinnati and the Midwest as a pitcher and longtime Reds radio color man, Joe Nuxhall passed last night (see link below).

Joe Nuxhall dies at 79

...and...

'Regular Joe' touched countless lives

He was the youngest player ever to appear in a major league game when he pitched at age 15 for the Reds during WWII.

We can all think of a handfull of folks that helped ignite our love for the game. For me, Joe Nuxhall was one of those. I remember laying in bed late at night listening to Joe, along with Al Michaels and later Marty Brennaman call games late into the night when the Reds were on the West Coast.

Like some other legendary baseball announcers, he was a "homer." But we loved our "homer." Many times I remember the call by Al or Marty (with Joe's enthusiastic 'commentary' in the background in parenthesis), "Bench lifts a fly ball into deep left field (Get outta here!), Brock drifts back to the wall (GO! GO! Get outta here!), she's gone! (Yeah! Alright!)"

He hosted the "Star of the Game" postgame show, which I also stayed up even later to listen too. And as he always closed out the broadcast, so will I for him:

This is the old lefthander roundin' third and headin' for home. Good night everyone!

Thanks for the memories and God bless you Joe Nuxhall!

I always thought Joe's sign off was perfect.

As sad as it made me to read JB's news that that Joe had passed, I must say that after reflecting about Joe for a while his memory has brought a smile to my face and lifted my heart. I was lucky enough to have grown up in the Cincinnati area and I have many wonderful memories of sitting on the front porch with my dad listening to Joe and Marty calling the games on WLW. As simple as it was, I miss those days of listening to a ball game with my dad.

I was blessed to grow up during the Big Red Machine era and as special as some of those players were, the news of Joe’s passing has made me realizing how important Joe was in creating some of my greatest baseball memories. Those memories play a big part of why I love the game today.

It is a sad day for baseball, Joe you will be missed.
Joe Nuxhall had one of my favorite baseball card pictures when I was a little kid in the mid-60s....I'm sure I still have it up in the trunk...but my brother and I (probably ages 5 and 7) thought it was so cool that he was wearing what appeared to be a shiny silver jacket beneath his jersey-vest. We wouldn't have traded that Joe Nuxhall card for nothin'!

Krak,

Might this be the memory?

It's a sad day in Cincy.
I was driving home from the airport this morning listening to satellite radio. WLW-700, the Reds flagship station.

Non-stop sports talk about Nux with replays of some of his famous calls...Seaver's 3000th strikeout, Rose's 2500th hit, etc... What a homer he was! My wife who didn't grow up in Cincinnati was with me and was just in awe of the excitement and enthusiasm in Joe's voice as he screamed for a ball out of the park to stay fair or rooted Larkin or Griffey Jr. around the bases.

I remember traveling outside of Cincinnati when I was in college and listening to other teams' games on their stations. Maybe they were more 'professional,' but nothing like Joe's rooting home the Reds. I really miss that and now its gone for good.

Listening this morning kind of re-connected me to my childhood...to my parents (who I used to listen to the games with but have passed too)...friends...brothers and sisters...youth baseball days. Others that called in remarked the same. Geez this is a sad day for Reds fans.
