I believe the umpires proceded correctly in this situation last night, even if they apparently indicated they missed the initial call.
Top of 9, two on, two out, batter represents go ahead run. 0-2 count. Lefty pitcher throws breaking ball middle in to right hand hitter. He starts to swing, realizes ball is breaking hard into him. Does one of the check swing/spin swings that we've all seen trying to get out of the way. Ball hits him, goes to backstop, catcher picks it up and throws to first, while batter is on ground. PU immediately called foul ball and put his hands up. Home coach comes out to argue, they have a conference with BU. This has been a long game, score is 13-11, thanks to HU tiny, but consistent strike zone, numerous errors by both teams, and the only reason we're this close to the end after 3 hours and 15 minutes is because 17 of 18 players can't hit a curve or layoff a change up in the dirt. It is still 80+ at 10 p.m. Crowd is unhappy, teams are unhappy, My understanding is when the HU called it foul, and he did do so immediately, it was foul. During the conference, the BU apparently convinced him that it only hit the batter, not the bat, but that his original call had to stand. After about 10 minutes, they finally got everybody back, and alls well as batter eventually popped out to 2b. I think they got it right, even if he missed the original call.
