I POSTED THIS THREAD A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, Thought I would bring it back to the top - FYI FOR 07,08,09's

My '05 received his inital eligibility status papers from NCAA today in the mail. Everything looks good and it told him he just needs to send in the final transcript after graduation and he'll be set.

Just another reminder to all, if you have not registered with the clearinghouse, it probably would be a good idea to get the ball rolling on this.

Your '05 must register and have his transcript & SAT scores approved in order to be eligible to receive athletic scholarship money from D-I & D-II schools.

It's another important thing that needs to be done along with all of the many other ones.

You said you received your son's initial eligibilty from the Clearing House. My son registered a while back and I have seen updated information on the NCAA Clearing House web site, but have not received any information in the mail or any type of initial eligibility notice even on their web site. He should not have any problems with 1150 SAT and 3.66 GPA. Does everyone get notified by mail?
sc - We registered months ago and have never received anything in the mail. However, this is a great reminder and my son will be calling tomorrow to check on the situation.

My son actually knows a kid that started at a D2 school back in the fall. Grades and everything are ok, but Clearinghouse paperwork has not gotten processed and the kid is still unable to practice with the team. Definately not something you want to ignor or take lightly!

He registered back in the summer & mailed the release forms and sent the certified transcripts in October. He just got a reply in the mail yesterday.

I did go to the clearinghouse site and his information had been updated there as well.

We were told by some friends last year to register early as it does take a while to get it processed.

My son got his letter also but it was incorrect. Some of his classes did not make it on the eligibility list as they did not match what was listed for our school. I had to contact the school registrar who then sent a letter certifying the classes. I checked online the other day and it still is not updated and it has been about a month since the letter was sent.

I was told they will review the paperwork when they get to it (and usually not until the senior year) unless the college coach contacts NCAA which will then prompt them to pull your paperwork and get it into the system.

I spoke to the clearinghouse last week. There is no such a thing as "initial eligibility". Eligibility is determined when the final high school transcipt is received along with an SAT or ACT test score. The information that is provided prior to graduation and what the '05's may be receiving now is just a progress report stating what is missing and what needs to be completed for eligibility. An example is 4th year English which is an eligibility requirement and what every '05 is taking (hopefully) this year.
I applied to the Clearinghouse in late Summer. Good thing I did because I had some paperwork returned that was inaccurate. After months of going back and forth, we got it cleared-up before I went away to school.
Biggest suggestions anyone gave me was to make sure you send anything either Express Mail or have someone sign for it. That way, you are sure that the Clearinghouse got it in the first place.
CV, I'm glad you bumped this. I had meant to do that myself. We checked with the clearinghouse after your last reminder and found they were missing a transcript from a correspondence course my son had taken at UK. It took them months to be able to tell us they were missing something!

Good reminder - this is definately not something you want to wait until the last minute to do!
Good reminder for all seniors to check their Clearinghouse status.

As DB2BMom said earlier this year, class credits CAN be incorrectly posted and it takes time to get them straightened out! So don't wait to review your records and make sure you stay on top of any correction that needs to be made.

At this point, if a senior sent in a transcript after last year, they should see a status similar to my son's: "Division I: Preliminary (See Eligibility Codes); Division II: Preliminary /Qualifier and credit" The eligibility codes listed indicate that Div I requires the confirmation of 4th year English and both require proof of Graduation. You may have other required classes listed. Just make sure that you have or ARE completing these classes by this last semester. The final transcript after graduation will remove the preliminary status.

Don't forget to have a final transcripts sent by your HS to both the Clearinghouse and your college as soon after graduation as possible. Then check the status throughout the summer to ensure that all is cleared before school starts in the Fall. You will not be able to play ball at a DI or DII until you are cleared.

FYI - My daughter is a HS golfer finishing her Junior year and was instructed to begin this process in July. I would imagine that would apply to any student athlete with DI or DII potential. Also, for you '06 student athletes and parents; the NCAA has a clearinghouse booklet available upon request (we just received ours) which is VERY helpful.

To elaborate on my post in conjunction with TRhit's - this is where I found the booklet I mentioned. I think it can be printed from the site but I preferred a hard copy, which is what they sent.
How early is early enough? Is there such a thing as being too early?
I have read and been told conflicting information. Have an '07 student; NCAA website (and booklet, I think) recommend to register at the END of the junior year. However, several coaches and scouts have said to register this fall.

Does anyone know officially? Will it hurt to start the process now? Or should I wait until next May?

There are NO negatives to registering with the NCAA Clearinghouse early, so go ahead and do so whenever you'd like. Our son registered during his HS So. year. I suggest making it a "must-do" by the end of his junior year, though you really only need to get his school records "NCAA qualified" before the Fall of his freshman year of college.

Just as an additional reminder, get with your HS Guidance people and make sure they submit final transcripts that reflect proof of graduation, completion of NCAA Core Course requirements etc.

Depending on your HS, you may have to submit the "Final Transcript Release Form" ...

In regards to registering with the CH, they are swamped with processing the current years crop of athletes.

Register the summer between Junior/Senior year beginning July 1.

Way before that though (and even in Freshmen year)you'd better be aware of the Core Course Requirements so you can plan with your Guidance Counselor...
I had a conversation just yesterday with the mother of a D2 freshman who found out in early January that the Clearinghouse had refused to certify him. She said the decision was devastating and son did not even want to return to his college. They thought they had done everything required, but her son had taken some odd courses (algebra I taken over a 2-year span rather than 1 year -- NCAA issued only a half-credit -- plus a geography course taken over the summer through independent study that the NCAA failed to recognize). Make sure you have everything in order to prevent this sort of heartbreak!
