I think it comes down to judgement - lets say ball his hit deep in whole, SS makes a great play on it near the grass, turns and throws a one hopper to 1B on the outfield side of bag - 1B makes the play with foot on bag but runner beats throw - I score it a hit.

Next, ball hit to 2B to his right, makes play, double pumps and then throws wild pulling 1B off the bag - Error.

All of these are you have to see it. I listen to the Braves alot and the announcers can tell you which teams have "home town" scorekeepers. Some are unreal - most are legit.
Since you are talking MLB, a note in the Official Baseball rules should answer your question.....

Rule 10.05 Note:

"When applying the above rules always give the batter the benefit of the doubt. A safe course to follow is to score a hit when exceptionally good fielding fails to result in a putout"..


Clearly OBR leans toward the batter in scoring a hit or error......
