I think it depends on conflicting leagues/end of the year tournaments. Obviously reputation may come into play. Some groups don't allow having a kid on two teams in that same group. I think the player personally should talk to his coach from his previous team and make sure he is not leaving his team in a horrible spot. Normally there are ways to accomidate both sides by playing in tournaments where one of the teams isn't playing.
Speaking only for DBAT 18, I do not recruit players during the summer season. Having said that, I usually receive a number of calls during the summer from players that are either not playing on a team or have recently quit playing for a team and are looking for a place to play the rest of the summer.

There is generally an unspoken code of conduct among most of the upper tier teams not to steal players but there are some that do whatever they want and openly pick up players from smaller, unestablished teams to take to tournaments and such.

Come to think of it maybe we should consider adopting a new rule though: Not to take players away from BBI teams but rather declare open season on all others..... Wink

Might could even make a game out of it and assign a number of points for certain organizations. Maybe 10 points for one of those circus tent hatted kids, 5 for one wearing the vegas, and so on.... Big Grin The BBI Premier teams could liken it to skeet shooting and keep running totals. The team with the most points at the end of the summer wins an all-expenses-paid trip to Gun Barrel City.

Do you (any reader) feel there is a difference in when a team approaches a player against a player approaching a team? What about a kid who has friends on the team that sparks an interest? Stealing players should never happen, but is there any grey area? What about if a teams season finishes, is it considered "stealing" once the first team finishes, the kid starts with another team? I think it's a pretty touchy subject. Each situation is unique.
I don't think there is any difference between a player approaching a team or a team approaching a player. Either way it is fine if the original team isn't left on the short end and the kid get more innings.

However, because the organizations and the coaches have the power to do as they please and promise whatever they want to a kid you have to be very careful with moving between teams.

It seems that at the end of the summer season that it is excepted / accepted that good players can be asked to "guest".

Last summer a friend's son end-up getting an additional 60 at-bats and pitching another 20 innings that he wouldn't gotten. The kid ended up playing on three additional team by the beginning of August. JMO
