As a junior I have been getting emails from coaches since Sept.1. Some from target schools, some not. There is one coach who sent me his cell number and wants me to come visit and talk. This is not one of my target schools but I have heard to keep all possibilities open. With limited family finances, is it worth it to go out to this school (it is in midwest)when it is not in my top 10?

Well, doesn't that depend on if you actually go there and receive serious scholarship money? Sometimes knowing what you don't want is just as important as knowing what you want. I'd rather have a fishing line with a bite in a hole that wasn't known for producing quality fish than one with no bite in a hole of my choice. Doesn't it make you wonder what you might have caught?

But bottom line is...if you can't afford to go....it doesn't matter anyway. There's ways to come up with extra income on your own if you want to bad enough.

Yes, I feel you should not be burning any bridges just yet. A lot depends on how much interest you're getting from other schools and particularly those in your top 10. So, it seems a good idea to call this coach, or at least e-mail him)and let him know you'd like to come but because of "limited family finances" it would probably take some time to figure out how to make such a trip. This may lead to an "Official Visit" where it may not cost the family all that much to go.

Keep in mind that these coaches always want to know just how much interest you have in them and the school and if they feel they're not at the top of your list, you'll probably never hear from them again. It can be a delicate balancing act when waiting to hear from the schools you're REALLY like to hear from.
Talking sounds like great advice. Certainly nothing wrong with telling him that money is tight so you are not in a position to pay for a trip just yet. Since you've just started your junior year you aren't in crunch time yet.

There are lots of folks who change their top 10 list during and after their junior year. A lot depends on the interest you receive from the schools on your list.

Congratulations on the early interest!
