My son is a senior 3rd basebman and my husband was told that if a college coach sends an invitation to a player/propect for a 1 day winter "camp" for their program they should not,as he said, "blow it off".My son has attended college camps during the summer with the programs he is interested in and
some of these winter camps are resonable as far as price, but some,I think are expensive. Should we continue to go to these college camps to show we are still very interested? Is this a coaches way of getting one last look at a player or a fundraiser for program?

Good questions, but there is no pat answer. Generally, these are fundraisers, but, they do find the occasional player through them. I say occasional, only because they can have many players that wind up on their roster be former camp attendee's but that's not generally the only place they've been seen or recruited.

If it were me, I'd ask if I'd ever heard from this coach personally before, and then perhaps email the coach and ask him directly how much interest there is in Junior.

Best of luck.
This "camp" invite is from lower D1 college. He has had contact with the coaches since his junoir year and they have seen him @ a showcase as well as their summer prospect camp. They mentioned to him they will be seriously following him this Fall/Winter.He has consistantly been emailing them his schedules and updates. But,
he has had the strongest interest from other D3 and NAIA programs.
Should he concentrate on attending the
winter camps where the interest is strongest?
Is it okay to ask a coach how intersted they are in you as a prospect?

Absolutely. You should feel comfortable asking almost anything...it should be a very transparent process. You could ask, "Do you view Junior as a scholarship player at your school?"

If' he's already been to one of their camps, I really don't see the reason to attend another, unless he's grown quite a bit or become much better at his skills.

This can all get so confusing and over complicated if we let it. This site has been my safe haven!

I agree. Very helpful. Especially at this time of year, it gets crazy with all the activity and seniors just don't have the time to waste on a camp that was only after their money.

Still, I do wonder how coaches who see video, etc., in far off regions will know how good a player is if they can't see them in person?
Baseballfam, I agree with CPLZ and send coach e-mail. My son got a late invite his senior year to big D1 with questionnaire and invite. We knew at that time son was way out of their league and did not bite for their camp. If coach e-mails you back with solid information regarding your son then consider going. I sent this D1 an e-mail about his invite, never heard back. Many recruiters will lead parents on about their sons just to keep them on the hook.
